St. Patrick's Day News:

Today is St. Patrick's Day, a day that remembers one of Ireland’s patron saints. It largely celebrates Irish-American culture in the United States.

St. Patrick's Day is fixed on March 17, but may occasionally be moved by Catholic Church authorities. This happened in 1940, so that the celebrations would not fall on Palm Sunday, and in 2008 to avoid Holy Monday, the last Monday before Easter Sunday.

The most common St. Patrick's Day symbol is the shamrock. The shamrock is the leaf of the clover plant and a symbol of the Holy Trinity.

Sons of American Legion Squadron 90 will host a breakfast 8 a.m. to noon Sunday in the restaurant in the American Legion Post 90 at 1325 Trinity Dr.

The breakfast is held every third Sunday and proceeds benefit American Legion charities.

I learned how to cook traditional New Mexican dishes at my Grandmother’s side. We raised a few animals, a small flock of chickens and a vegetable garden so, my methods are still Farm to Table, a new buzz phrase in the world of cuisine but a centuries’ old tradition in Northern New Mexico that is still alive and well.

Community Invited To Fish Fry Dinner At IHM Tonight

The Knights of Columbus invite the community to the annual Lenten Fish Fry tonight.

Dinner is served 5-7 p.m. in the parish hall at Immaculate Heart Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road.

Meals for adults are $10 and include two pieces of fried cod, freshly made coleslaw and rice or French fries.

Meals for children are $7 and include one piece of fried cod, freshly made coleslaw and rice or French fries or a grilled cheese sandwich and French fries.

All meals include lemonade or iced tea and homemade desserts.

St. Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church in Los Alamos is excited to once again offer its Traditional Blini Breakfast Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1319 Trinity Dr.

Serving times are divided into three 1-hour segments: 

  • 9 a.m.;
  • 10 a.m.; and
  • 11 a.m. 

The first Blini Breakfast was served in 1999 and the event has continued each year since. A blini breakfast is traditional in preparation for the Great Fast (Lent), which will soon be upon us. This breakfast uses many of the ingredients that will be abstained from for the duration of the fast.

Since the Secret City Kitchen opened a café in the UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) Student Center in November 2016, students, UNM-LA employees and community members have been enjoying the convenience of having a restaurant on campus.

Owner Jeremy Varela’s menu of breakfast and lunch items has a regular following of customers, and draws new customers every day.

Stephanie and Marcel Remillieux are opening their French gourmet store and tea salon, Fleur de Lys, at 7 a.m. Tuesday at 15th Street and Trinity Drive. They said 70 percent of their products are on the shelves and the remaining items are arriving over the next several days. A large crowd is expected Tuesday, so they hope everyone will relax and enjoy a cup of tea and check out the products available at Fleur de Lys.

Tickets are $10 in advance and available from any LAHS Naval Science student. Tickets are $12 at the door.
