Los Alamos High School NJROTC cadets hosted the Rio Grande Showdown Saturday, Oct. 28 with NJROTC cadets from Montrose, Colo.

The two teams competed in sporter air rifle, shooting targets while prone, standing and kneeling.

Y Youth Basketball Registration Extended To Nov. 3

The Family YMCA’s Youth Basketball program is a skills developmental program for youth in grades 1-6 that would like to learn the fundamentals of basketball, team participation, and to play a few games.
 
Registration for this program is open until Nov. 3. Players will be placed on teams based on their local school and will meet there twice a week for practice Nov. 6 – Feb. 2.
 
Games are Saturdays Dec. 9 – Feb. 3. Teams for grades 1-2 are co-ed, with boys and girls spilt for grades 3-4 and grades 5-6. Volunteer Coaches, Asst. Coaches and Team Parents are needed.

Los Alamos Lacrosse Awarded $9,000 Grant

SPORTS News: 

Los Alamos Youth Lacrosse has received an equipment grant valued at $9,000 from U.S. Lacrosse. The First Stick Grant awards the league with equipment for boys and girls players including sticks, helmets, eyewear, pads, gloves and goalie equipment. The grant includes complimentary membership to U.S. Lacrosse for up to 40 new players and four coaches.

NMAA To Hold Officials Appreciation Weeks

ALBUQUERQUE  The New Mexico Activities Association is proud to announce the first of a three-part series of Officials Appreciation Weeks to honor and recognize the men and women who serve as interscholastic sports officials in the state of New Mexico.
 
The NMAA will be promoting one Officials Appreciation Week for each of its competitive seasons. Fall sports will be honored Oct. 30 through Nov. 3 for football, soccer and volleyball. Winter sports recognition will be Jan. 29 through Feb. 2 for basketball, spirit, swimming and wrestling.

LAHS Girls Soccer Hosts Grants In 1st Round Of 2017 NMAA State Soccer Championships Saturday

The Los Alamos High School Girls Soccer team will now host Grants in the 1st round of the 2017 NMAA State Soccer Championships.

The game kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Sullivan Field.

Tickets are $5 for adults. No passes will be accepted.

Study: Noncompliance Hobbles Comprehensive Background Check Policy For Private Gun Sales

Of the three states that recently expanded comprehensive background check (CBC) policies to include all gun transfers, including those among private parties, only Delaware showed an overall increase in firearm background checks. Washington and Colorado had no changes, which the study authors say suggests that compliance and enforcement were incomplete.

The study, which posted online in Injury Prevention, is believed to be the first to assess the association between CBC policy enactment and changes in background-check rates.

Progressive Fighting Systems of New Mexico will present a Jeet Kune Do Self-Defense Seminar noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 28-29 at High Flyers Gymnastics in the Pueblo Complex, 1900 Diamond Dr. in Los Alamos.
 
The fee is $150 at the door. Students 18 and under pay $30 for this seminar. All students must have a parent/guardian sign a waiver to participate in the seminar.

In Duke City Soccer League action at the New Mexico State Soccer Complex in Bernalillo, the Los Alamos Boys U11 LAFC Krypton Lasers won two games on Saturday, Oct. 7. to even their record to 3-3.

ALBUQUERQUE – The Los Alamos boy’s and girl’s golf teams continued their impressive seasons at the Arroyo del Oso golf course on Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights.

TAOS The 35th Annual Taos Mountain Balloon Rally is Friday through Sunday, Oct. 27-29 at the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally field on Albright Street behind the Taos County Courthouse.
 
The free weekend event, which will include three ascensions, food, vendors and entertainment, is expected to draw more than 35 balloons and visitors from all over the southwest.
 
The event kicks off at 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27 with the daily Dawn Patrol and will continue with a Mini Mass Ascension at 8:15 a.m.
