As part of the Los Alamos High School homecoming activities this past week, the girls formed two football teams to play the Powder Puff Football game. This is the complement to the boys Billy Bob Volleyball game. The boys from the football team were the coaches and the officials. Scenes From Topper Volleyball Match Against Capital

Sophia Salazar leads her team onto the floor for a grudge match against the Capital Jaguars Volley Ball team Tuesday evening in Griffith Gymnasium. The Jaguars had defeated the Toppers in the two previous meetings and the Toppers were looking for revenge ... they got their wish defeating the Jaguars 3-1. The Toppers continued to show improvement beating another 5A team. The team showed their versatility running 5-1 to begin the night and finished in 6-2 using the strengths of the team to upend the Capital Jaguars.

Scenes From Billy Bob Volleyball Game Wednesday

Hilltoppers Sam Fisher, Team White and Dylan Irish, Team Green go head to head at the net as part of Los Alamos High School Homecoming activities this week. The ‘Billy Bob Game’, a longstanding tradition where senior boys play volleyball as a fundraiser for the volleyball team, was held Wednesday evening in Griffith Gymnasium. Football players divided into two volleyball teams and played each other and the girls volleyball team members participated as coaches and officials.

The early morning start time has bikers scurrying to get ready including Quinn Abtalterer for the 46th Annual Tour de Los Alamos held Sunday in Los Alamos. The race is said to be the oldest in the southwest. Sunday drew 59 bikers in the 27-mile course that runs the loop around Bandelier and the Truck Route and ends at the intersection of East Jemez Road/West Road on LANL property. Scenes From Toppers Vs. Cleveland

The coaches go over the last minute plans before the game, which was an exciting, end-to-end, intense game between the Toppers and Cleveland played at Sullivan Field culminated in a late goal that pushed Cleveland past the Toppers. Vainey Terrazas scored on a 1v1 against the keeper on a free kick from Valerie Li. Both teams continued to attack and had solid opportunities throughout the match. Steady midfield play from Amy Littleton, Katie Hoplins, Alissia Haagenstand, Kaya Krantz, and Preslie Coffey was the key to possession the Toppers maintained.

The Los Alamos Hilltoppers volleyball team greets their opponent for Wednesday nights game against the Cleveland Storm Volleyball Team. The Storms has been one of the premier volleyball teams in the state for many years, however this year is an exception, they are struggling.

The Topper Girls and Topper Boys played very strong soccer teams from Albuquerque, the Bosque Bobcats in a double hitter this past Tuesday at Sullivan Field. The Topper Girls had the early game and created many offensive chances shooting 27 times against the Bobcats. Two found their way into the net in the second half: Valerie Li scored off a pass from Vianey Terrazas and Alyssa Parker scored from an assist from Alix Hailey. Leah Wolfsberg and Shelly Doyle did a good job controlling their ball from the back and distributing up to the offense.

Los Alamos High School Golf teams hosted their annual golf tournament Monday at the Los Alamos County Golf Course. The tournament hosted 85 players from 10 schools. The Topper Boys Team finished in first place with a combined score of 305 ahead of Albuquerque Academy who scored 317 as a team. The Topper Girls finished in second place with score of 352, just 7 shots behind the team from Cleveland High School. Photo by John McHale/

LAHS Toppers Win Against Bloomfield Bobcats Friday

The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team rips their way onto Sullivan Field Friday night for a football extravaganza. The Toppers were to play the Bloomfield Bobcats who had a record of 5-1 entering this game. There was a large jubilant crowd in attendance and they were not disappointed with all the evenings events. The NJROTC presented the colors and the Topper marching band was in attendance and performed at halftime.

Ski season is right around the corner! Today marks 99 days until the kickoff of the ski season for Pajarito Mountain, which will open for the 2018/19 season Friday, Dec. 21.
El Niño is forecast for the 2018/19 season, which means more powder days at Pajarito! The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting El Niño conditions for this winter, which tend to produce a greater than average snowfall across the southern Rockies, benefiting New Mexico.

LAHS Girls Varsity Soccer Win Against St. Michaels

LAHS Girls Varsity Soccer caught fire in the second half to secure a non-district win against St. Michaels High School. Aix Hailey had a hat trick scoring two of her goals in 38 seconds in the 2nd half. Two of her goals were assisted by Alissia Haagenstad and Valerie Li. Anna Matuszak scored in each half assists from Kaitlyn McGrane. The defense was stingy all evening allowing St. Mike's only made 6 shots. Solid defense pressure from Vianey Terrazas, Amy Littleton, Shelly Doyle, and Isabella Hodges kept the Toppers in possession for most of the match.

LAHS Toppers Mercy Rule Pojoaque Elks 51-0

The score board shows the lopsided score at the end of the game, as the Toppers mercy ruled the Pojoaque Elks 51-0 in a game played Friday night on Jocona Field at Pojoaque High School. The Toppers had little trouble with the Elks as they scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, and racked up the rest as the game played out. Both offense and defense were a vast improvement from the game the week before against the Taos Tigers. The Toppers next game will be a home game against Bloomfield Friday night at Sullivan Field.

The Topper volleyball team takes to the floor to play an old foe, the St. Pius Sartans in Griffith Gym last Tuesday evening. The Toppers have not won a volleyball match with the Sartans since 2017. This match-up almost changed that and was one of the most exciting matches in recent history. The Toppers easily won the first set 25-15. The second match was very close but the Sartans won 26-28. The third set was all Sartans 13-25. However the Toppers came back in the fourth set winning 28-26. The Sartans managed to win the fifth set 15-17 and won the match.

Professional Basketball Player Alex Kirk Of Los Alamos Named MVP In Championship Game In Tokyo

Professional basketball player Alex Kirk receives the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the pre-season tournament (Early Cup). Alvark Tokyo won the championship game during which Kirk, a Los Alamos High School graduate, scored 26 points and 8 rebounds. Alvark Tokyo is a Japanese professional basketball team in Tokyo. Toyota sponsors the team, which plays in the Japanese B.League. Until 2000, the team was known as the Toyota Pacers.

Three Los Alamos Horsewomen Qualify For U.S. National Championships

Three Los Alamos horsewomen have qualified to compete at the United States Eventing Association’s 2018 American Eventing Championships. Riders Haylee Hayden, Ashley Smith and Laura Worl Kober departing last week to compete at the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, Color.
Eventing is best described as an equestrian triathlon. The sport originated as a cavalry test and is involves three phases: dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

Toppers Win Against Los Lunas Tigers

Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team, the three time defending champions of the Louie Cernicek Memorial Tournament played Friday/Saturday at Sullivan Field. The Toppers first played against the Los Lunas Tigers and after a slow first half, found their game and won easily 5-1. However, in the second game the Toppers fell to Clovis 0-2, third game they lost to Roswell 2-3 and the Toppers ended up in fourth place for this year's tournament.

The New Mexico State Fair offers livestock exhibits and competitions of all kinds to local farmers, ranchers, and 4H club members, while school children from all over the state look forward to seeing their art work displayed in one of the exhibit halls.

We had to slip out of the Los Alamos Rodeo early to make the car races at Sandia Speedway west of Albuquerque. Speeding from dirt arena to dirt track wasn't going to make up for stopping at home for my slow-poke boys to assemble warmer clothes. What did help, as Miss Sierra informed us at the gate, was a rain delay.

Lady Hilltoppers Volley Ball Battles St. Mike’s

Lady Hilltopper Sophia Salazar spike kills a drive in the 3rd set. She had 11 kills for the night as St. Mike’s came out strong, winning the first set 25-12. In the second game Los Alamos stayed with St. Mike and lost steam. The 3rd game was the most exciting with both teams trading points and there were a couple of long rallies. Then in the 4th, the Hilltoppers had a hard time getting past their blocks and St. Mike’s was able to find the floor better than LA. For the Hilltoppers both Sophia Salazar and Natalie Gallegos had 11 kills in the night. Gallegos led with five block kills.

Constitution Day High Elevation 5K Run/2 Mile Walk

Through the Constitution Day High Elevation 5K Run/2 Mile Walk, the Republican Party of Los Alamos is promoting health, wellness and fun.

The race is 7 a.m., Sept. 15 at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area.

The Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is on the north face of Pajarito Mountain in the Jemez Mountains in North Central New Mexico, west of Los Alamos. It is on 850 acres of privately owned land with a base elevation of 9,000 feet and top elevation of 10,440 feet.

Participants are advised to be prepared for high elevation, uneven terrain, dirt, rocks, roots and trees.

The Lady Hilltoppers Volley Ball Team played their season opener against the Bloomfield Bobcats Saturday afternoon in Griffith Gymnasium. The Toppers came out strong and won three sets, 25-8, 25-16 and 25-12 to win the match. Sophia Salazar had 15 kills and 6 digs on the match. Natalie Gallegos had 9 kills and earned 12 points from the service line, with five of those being aces. Kyla Sandoval had 7 digs and 14 points and 4 ace serves. Elise Olive had 17 assists and earned 7 points off of serves. Elodie Thelliez had 9 assists and earned 11 serving points.

The Lady Toppers Soccer Team opened their season with a game against the Santa Fe Prep Blue Griffins at home at Sullivan Field. The Toppers cruised to a 3-0 win over the Griffins, which had an undefeated season last year during regular play and lost in the final game at the State Playoffs in a double overtime.
