Former LANL Director Harold Agnew Has Died

Harold M. Agnew, died Sept. 29 2013 at his home in Solana Beach, Calif.

Agnew was present at Fermi's first neutron chain reaction Dec. 2, 1942, director of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for 10 years and for 10 years president of General Atomics.

He had been afflicted with chronic lymphocytic leukemia since spring.

Agnew was born in Denver, Colo. After receiving his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Denver in 1942, he joined Enrico Fermi’s research group at the University of Chicago.

Edgar Davis Bush Jr., 81, of Los Alamos, N.M. died on September 22, 2013. “Ed” was born on January 1, 1932 in Morenci, Ariz. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, son Mike and wife Donna of Chandler, Ariz., his grandson Matthew and wife Maureen and his great grandson Declan of Renton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his grandson Danny.

He was taken from us after a 9 month battle with cancer. Ed’s full life ended peacefully with his wife and son by his side.

Ed and Carolyn were high school sweethearts and have been happily married for 59

Myron L. Stein, 85, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. He was born in Sacramento, Calif., where he grew up, attending University of California at Berkley, receiving a degree with honors in Astronomy.  

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following his service, he joined his older brother, Leland Stein, in Los Alamos where Myron worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 50 years, retiring in 2008 and as a Guest Scientist continued to come to the Lab.

Bonnie Murchie Koch passed away on Wednesday August 28, 2013 at her home in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Bonnie was born July 20, 1954 in Bloomington, Indiana, the third daughter of four children of William and Barbara (Hamilton) Murchie. Bonnie graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1972 and went on to receive a BA in chemistry in 1976 with Phi Beta Kappa and an MS in geophysics in 1979 from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana. Bonnie was an acclaimed soloist and playwright in high school productions.

Marilyn Quadracci Fabry, 60, a resident of Los Alamos, went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 31, 2013 following a battle with cancer. She was born on June 13, 1953 to Art and Laura Quadracci in McAlester, Okla. She was an only child – God bless them.

Dr. Charles Fremont Huff passed away in Los Alamos, New Mexico on Friday, August 30, 2013 from complications due to Parkinson’s disease.

Charles (always known as “Charley”) was born July 21, 1939 in Alice, Texas to John Arleigh and Nellmarie Huff and spent most of his childhood in Boerne.

He met the love of his life, Mary Katherine Vogt, when he was 9 years old, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage on August 27, 2013.

Charley got his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas and his PhD from Oklahoma

Russell Hugh Hand was born May 30, 1924 and died on Aug. 27, 2013 at the age of 89 due to a traffic accident.
He grew up in Deer Park, Texas and was the third born of six brothers. After receiving a college football scholarship, he joined the Navy and was stationed in the Philippines. When he returned from WWII he began working for the Shell Oil Company and also was a devoted volunteer firefighter for over 25 years.
In June of 1949, Russell married the love of his life, Faye. They would be married for 64 years.

Zenas "Slim" Boone, 94, of Los Alamos died Aug. 13, 2013 at Los Alamos Medical Center. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Irene U. Boone, parents Hettie (Penland) and Andrew Boone, brothers Hudson and Charles, sisters Flora, Ruth and Dorothy and son Charles.  

Slim was born Aug. 27, 1918 in Yancy County, NC. His early years were spent working on farms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He moved into Washington, D.C. and after working on bridge construction he was hired for the trolley system where is gained his experience with electronics.

Jerry Buchen died of cancer at home surrounded by his loving family, in the "Summertime."

Jerry was a man of unique integrity who had the conviction and strength to live his own way. Born and raised in Los Alamos, he spent his adult life in Santa Fe after graduating from St. John's College in 1972. He owned Santa Fe Glass & Mirror for 20 years, after which he worked as an independent contractor, designer and builder.

Just short of his 95th birthday, our adored father left his cares behind and joined our mother, his most beloved wife, Sally. They were married for 65 years and can now pick up where they left off just a few years ago.

Dad was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his BS from Case School of Applied Sciences and returned to Case for night school to earn his MS in Metallurgical Engineering. Archerd Eli Youngblood, 87, a resident of Los Alamos and formerly of Palmer Township and Hellertown, Pa., passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe. Archerd was born April 25, 1926, in Evansville, Ind., and was the son of the late Leland Masters Youngblood and Nina Archerd.

On Sept. 10, 2009, Archerd and his late wife Atea Greco Youngblood celebrated 60 years of marriage. After his wife passed away, he moved to Los Alamos where he met his second wife, Marjorie Orth, whom he married Sept.

John Paul Pacheco, 30, a resident of El Guache, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his mother Geraldine Pacheco, maternal grandmother Emma Gurule and uncle Herman Gurule.

John was a mechanic and loved being outdoors, riding dirt bikes, four wheeling and mud bogging. He also enjoyed spending time with his sons at monster trucks and playing and teaching them about cars and taught them to drive the bobcat. John had a big and open heart and showed it through his emotion and big hugs he would give you.

A loving husband, father and grandfather of Las Vegas, Nev., Pastor Hal was born March 3, 1945, in Albuquerque, N.M.

June R. Jurney, born Virginia June Ramsdell, died peacefully at home April 25 at the age of 84.

June was raised in Mendota, WI, the youngest child of Martha and Harrison Ramsdell. She outlived her parents, her husband, and all her siblings: Leland, Dorothy, Eleanor, and Irene.

Like her sisters, June became a nurse. In July 1950 she and her sister Irene sailed to Europe to work at the American Hospital of Paris. At the hospital, she befriended the writer Richard Wright, who was a patient.

He was born in Havre, Mont., to Finn and Alice Heimdahl. The family moved to St. Louis Park, Minn., in 1952. David graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor degree in Business from Moorhead State University in 1971.

After graduating college, David found his true passion working with young people as Youth Director and Director of Camp Cormorant of the YMCA in Fargo, ND.
