Time To Get Dirty And Compost Food

COUNTY News:

It’s time to get dirty! Los Alamos County Council green lit the municipal-wide food composting in September and County staff are working to move the project along.

The projected start date for the food compost program is approximately two years.

County Sustainability Manager Angelica Gurule recently gave an update on the project to the Los Alamos Daily Post. She noted that the conceptual design was expected to be completed in May and work on the environmental study of the site is ongoing. From there, permitting will be addressed.

Conservation Kits Available At Los Alamos County Libraries

The Los Alamos Public Library System and the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) are partnering to bring hands-on conservation tools to the community through the new Library of Things.

Community members will have three chances in the next two weeks to demo the kits before they are officially available for checkout.

Capodaglio Is Top Predictor In Weekly Pace Race

Giacomo Capodaglio was the best predictor in the weekly pace race held Tuesday on the road in lower Bayo Canyon at 7 seconds off his predicted time. 

Other accurate predictors were: 

  • Anders Medin, 13, and Madeline Harms with a tie with a 9 second differential;
  • Eugenya Simakov and Tony Borek tied at 10 seconds off;
  • Mary Snow recording 12 seconds off; and
  • and Elivcrio Acosta and Valerio Pinchetti tied at 21 seconds.

On the 1 mile course Adrian Medin, 12, was the best finisher at 7:03 and the top female was Priscila Rosa recording a 9:28.

USACE To Host Earth Day ‘Birds Of Abiquiu Lake’ Saturday

ABIQUIU LAKE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Albuquerque District is scheduled to host a bird identification and count event for the public for Earth Day at the lake starting at 8 a.m. Satureday, April 22.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Abiquiu Lake Cerrito Recreation Area Boat Ramp at Group Shelter 3. The event is free, and everyone is welcome to participate.

Governor Declares State Of Emergency For Sandoval County

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order today declaring a state of emergency in Sandoval County due to flooding in the Jemez River corridor, which affected the Village of Jemez Springs water treatment facility, the Jemez/Walatowa Pueblo and the Village of San Ysidro.

The executive order makes $750,000 in state emergency funding available to assist Sandoval County with emergency measures, help prevent additional damage, repair public infrastructure and lessen the overall recovery time related to flooding impacts.

Government Agents Kill Endangered Mexican Gray Wolf Threatening Pack’s Survival

SILVER CITY An endangered Mexican gray wolf has been killed in New Mexico by federal employees, according to a document released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Affectionately named Rusty by a middle school student in a nationwide contest, the wolf was killed April 12, leaving behind his likely pregnant mate and several yearling pups.

The Service quietly authorized the killing on March 29, 2023 – the 25th anniversary of Mexican wolves’ return to the wild.

Spring runoff from the melting snowpack took off with a bang last week. Streamflows increased dramatically in rivers throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

The Jemez River drew the most attention and is a good example of how quickly conditions can change. It was flowing April 4 at 121 cubic-feet-per-second, which was near normal. Environment Department Testing For PFAS In Private Groundwater Wells Across New Mexico In April And May

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) will test private domestic wells for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across New Mexico in April and May 2023.

One or more groundwater wells can be sampled at no cost to the well owners. Limited sampling will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to those counties impacted by last summer’s fires. Jemez Mountains Snow Melt Update – How Can You Help?

SANTA FE — Current conditions from record snowfall this year in the Jemez Mountains is now melting due to warmer temperatures.

The good news is, we had some cooler temperatures yesterday reducing the volume of snowmelt. However, flooding is and will continue until approximately 20-30 inches of snow melt dissipates. 

In the meantime, the Santa Fe National Forest’s Jemez Ranger District is working with area partners to keep recreation areas and some roads closed so they won’t pose a safety issue for visitors and employees in the area.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is accepting applications for the state fiscal year 2024 Solid Waste Facility Grant Fund projects to fund engineering and infrastructure improvements at landfills, transfer stations, and collection centers.
