Daily Postcard: A black bear cub climbs a tree in Bandelier National Monument (BNM). Most mature female black bears are already sleeping in a den where they will give birth to cubs in January or February. Although mating for black bears usually occurs in the spring, the embryo doesn’t implant and begin to grow until November. Division Director Transitions At Energy, Minerals And Natural Resources Department

EMNRD News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department announced Thursday that two of its division directors will be leaving the agency at the end of 2022.

Oil Conservation Division Director Adrienne Sandoval has accepted the position of Air and Radiation Director for the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Region 8 Office in Denver. Dec. 31 is her last day with EMNRD. She has been OCD director since April of 2019.

Also Dec. 31, Mining and Minerals Division Director Jerry Schoeppner heads into retirement, wrapping up a 26-year state government career. Read More

House Passes Bill To Protect Firefighters From Exposure To Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Environmental Working Group applauds the House for passing a bill to help protect firefighters from exposure to the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS widely used in their tools and equipment.

Environment Department Reviewing Abatement Plan To Investigate Chlorinated Solvent Contamination At Former Alamogordo Dry Cleaner

NMED News:

ALAMOGORDO — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is reviewing a Stage 1 Abatement Plan (Plan) for the former Acme Hometown Cleaners dry-cleaning facility at 901 10th St., Alamogordo(Site).

The owners of the Site submitted the Plan to NMED to investigate and define the extent of groundwater and soil contamination from a release of tetrachloroethylene, also known as per chloroethene or PCE. PCE is a toxic chemical commonly used at dry cleaning facilities, which has been recently and widely replaced by alternative cleaners. The Site has been vacant since 2016.

Game & Fish Officers Free Buck Of Hammock Headgear!

View of the buck spotted by a local resident this morning on Sandia still tangled in hammock headgear. After seeing the announcement asking for the community’s help published this morning in the Los Alamos Daily Post, New Mexico Game & Fish Conservation Officers Perraglio and Otero were notified by the resident of the location of the buck which was hanging out with four does grazing in a yard on Sandia. The officers tranquilized the buck and removed the hammock tangled in its antlers. The buck was revived and observed for a period of time until it wondered off in search of his does.
