NPS: Valles Caldera National Preserve Introduces Online Reservations For Backcountry Vehicle Passes

NPS News:

JEMEZ SPRINGS — In an on-going effort to improve recreational access and opportunities, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin offering backcountry vehicle passes, Feb. 15 at Valles Caldera National Preserve by online reservation, instead of on a first come, first served basis.

In conjunction, the park also will extend the distance that visitors can drive into the park without a backcountry vehicle pass.

Currently, 35 backcountry vehicle passes are available daily during the 6-month summer season (May 15 to Nov. 15). With this change, passes will be released for reservation Read More

Trout are a coldwater gamefish. They thrive in coldwater environments where the water temperatures do not exceed 70 degrees during the year. In most of Southern New Mexico, trout would not survive during the summer.

The State Game and Fish Department stocks catchable-size rainbow trout in the lakes and streams of Southern New Mexico beginning in November to give anglers here a chance to catch trout. These stockings usually cease by the end of March.

NWS Forecast: Up To 7 Inches Of Snow For Los Alamos

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque forecast for today in Los Alamos includes snow showers with the temperature rising to near 31 by noon, then falling to around 22 during the remainder of the day. Total daytime snow accumulation of up to 7 inches is possible. Tonight’s forecast includes snow showers mainly between until 11 p.m. with a low around 16 and wind chill values as low as zero. Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) will be closing for the day as more snow is predicted throughout the day. All classes are canceled.

When school is dismissed early or cancelled for the day, all after school programs including athletics (both home and away contests) and activities are canceled.

County Non-essential Facilities On Delayed Opening

Los Alamos County Manager Steven Lynne has ordered a two-hour delay for all non-essential county government facilities today, Jan. 17, due to hazardous weather conditions.

County crews are working to clear major roads and streets according to the FY23 Snow and Ice Control Plan
