Republican Lawmakers Meet With NM Environment Secretary Tongate On New Food Handling Regulations

SANTA FE Republican members of the House and Senate met Wendesday with New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Secretary Butch Tongate to discuss the department’s new food handling regulations.
 
Lawmakers expressed concerns about the impact the regulations would have on community groups, businesses and nonprofit organizations in their districts.
 
The new regulations require anyone who handles food at a public function to have a food handler card. The requirement applies to any location where food is served, including movie theaters and community fundraisers.

Rose Chocolatier is hosting a reception for artist Michelle Griffin. The community is invited to stop by, meet Griffin, check out her paintings and enjoy some chocolate samples.
 
The reception is 5:30-7 p.m., Friday in Rose Chocolatier's new location at 149 Central Park Square.
 
At its new location, Rose Chocolatier offers espresso drinks and ample seating to enjoy visiting with friends. The pastry selection is growing and the chocolate case is full of new and old favorites.

Owner/chef Laura Crucet Hamilton hosted a winemaker’s dinner Jan. 21, at her Pig + Fig Café in White Rock that featured Matthew Rorick, the winemaker from Forlorn Hope Winery.
 
The menu included unique dishes like “Wild red snapper in thai red curry consommé”, “Blueberry sea salt scone, lavender sabayon, stone fruit compote, edible violet”, and “Sea scallops, micro watercress, agave lime beurre blanc.”
 
The wines from Forlorn Hope were a perfect match.

The curse that plagued a string of restaurants at 1789 Central Ave., appears to have finally ended. Diners are flocking to this location since local restaurateur Melissa Paternoster moved her popular Blue Window Bistro there earlier this month.

“We’ve had record breaking sales every single day,” she said.

ENTERTAINMENT News:

The Blue Window Bistro, at the restaurant’s new location in the heart of downtown Los Alamos, will host an evening of jazz with the Craig Martin Experience at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21.

“We’re pleased to have CME as the first musical performance at our new location,” owner Melissa Paternoster said. “The band was first music we hosted at our former location, too.”

CME will offer a set of traditional jazz favorites along with a mix of inventive original tunes composed by band members.

Things have been hopping at Chicken Teriyaki since the White Rock restaurant opened its doors Nov. 12. The restaurant, located at 25 Bonnie View Dr. is housed in the former Pizza Hut, which has stood empty for a number of years.

“I saw this place standing empty and decided I would like to open my restaurant there,” owner and main cook Nhan T. Nguyen said.

Rose Chocolatier has moved and is now located at 149 Central Park Square in the heart of downtown Los Alamos.

"We love our new space, especially being so near to other great local businesses," owner Marguerite McClay said. "To be precise we are across from Finishing Touch, between Allure and projectY and about half way between UnQuarked and Pet Pangaea. Pig and Fig’s owner, Chef Laura Crucet Hamilton, has hosted more than 60 wine dinners over the past few years. Every one of them has sold out in less than two hours.

Restaurateurs Pawel and Darota Listwan and former partners Patrick Mockler-Wood and his mother Catherine Mockler have ended their partnership and divided up their two local eateries.

The foursome came together to open the Pajarito Brewpub in November 2012. They went on to open Cottonwood on the Greens in April 2014.

There will NOT be a Cowboy Breakfast at the Posse Lodge on New Year's Day this year because there were not enough volunteers available to cover the event.

The next Cowboy Breakfast is scheduled for the first Sunday in February.

IRS: Time Is Running Short For 2016 Tax Moves

IRS News:

PHOENIX -- The Internal Revenue Service wants taxpayers to know they have some time left to make any final tax moves for the 2016 tax year.

“There are many opportunities for taxpayers to legitimately reduce taxes or defer income as the year winds down,” IRS spokesman Bill Brunson said. “A little tax planning now could save you time and money later.”  

A few tax items to consider:

  • Make Charitable Contributions. Make charitable contributions (cash or non-cash items) on or before Dec. 31. Give to a qualified public charity and keep a paper trail.

‘The Lodge’ Menu Surfaces After 26 Years

Rummaging through a drawer some 26 years after his beloved wife died, Roy Hopwood found a menu from one of the couple’s visits to “The Lodge” restaurant in Fuller Lodge.

“My wife Sharon collected things,” Hopwood said with a smile. “I hadn’t looked in that drawer in a longtime and was very surprised to find that old menu.”

He can’t recall the date he and his wife dined at The Lodge and she received the menu but its cover shows vehicles from the 1950s. Food prices include a prime rib sandwich for 95 cents.

Julian Garza and his daughter Clementina Garza welcomed guests at this morning’s special VIP opening of their new McDonald’s Restaurant in the Smith’s Marketplace Shopping Center. The restaurant officially opened for business to the public at 10:30 a.m. today. Julian Garza has been in the McDonald’s Restaurant business for more than 30 years and his daughter, who grew up in the business, joined him 25 years ago. The family owns the largest McDonald’s Restaurant in New Mexico, which is in Espanola.
