On the job in Los Alamos is County Clerk Naomi Maestas at a Voter Registration booth Tuesday on the UNM-LA campus. Maestas and her staff spread out across the community to register voters as part of National Voter Registration Day. Woman Arrested In Little League Embezzlement Case

Police made an arrest today in the case of the missing revenue from the Los Alamos County Little League concessions during this year’s season.

Cmdr. Preston Ballew confirmed this evening that police have charged the volunteer responsible for collecting and depositing that revenue, Janice Lovato, with embezzlement.

The Los Alamos County Tourism Implementation Task Force fully supports LA County Ordinance 695 and the proposed development of a hotel and conference center on the 20th Street extension in downtown Los Alamos.

The Tourism Implementation Task Force was created in February 2018 by Council to implement the County’s Tourism Strategic Plan.  This plan was written by the County’s Tourism Work Group with Design Workshop. FLACL Hosts $5 Bag Sale Saturday, Sept. 28

FLACL News:

The Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries (FLACL) is hosting a $5 Bag Sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the lobby of Mesa Public Library at 2400 Central Ave. 

The funds raised through the Bag Sale and the Friends Bookstore directly benefit Los Alamos County libraries in many ways.

The Youth Services Department, which creates and presents programs for ages 0-18 and intergenerational programming, is an annual beneficiary of Friends funding. In recent months, youth staff have added more Lego kits for building programs, materials to create ribbon bracelets

White Rock Crack Sealing Project Delay

COUNTY News:

The vendor performing the crack sealing on Bryce Avenue in White Rock this week had to cancel due to weather and other issues.

They have already issued door hangars for residents in this area. Residents should disregard the door hangars as the crew will not be crack sealing this week.

Weather permitting, the crew will resume work the week of Sept. 30. Door hangers will be re-issued the day before they anticipate resuming the project.

The Pajarito Astronomers will be holding a County-Sponsored Dark Night starting at 6:45 p.m. (sunset), Saturday, Sept. 28 at Spirio Soccer Field, Overlook Park in White Rock.

Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze.

The six planets Mercury, Venus, Jupiter (with its moons), Saturn (and its rings), Neptune and Uranus will potentially be visible during the evening. Ice Rink Improvements Public Meeting Sept. 25

The public is invited to attend a public meeting Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Fuller Lodge to review and comment on preliminary designs for the Ice Rink Improvements Project.

The presentation  begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a question and answer period.

Improvements include a new locker room and restroom and improvements to the existing building.

County Council Considers Property Tax Rates Tuesday

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Council will consider property tax rates at its Tuesday, Sept. 24 meeting, which are calculated by the State’s Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) pursuant to our local Assessor’s office annual valuation report.

In accordance with the Property Tax Code, property tax rates are calculated for all governmental units within the County that have imposed a tax on property. (The County, Public Schools and UNM-LA, as well as the state.)

Los Alamos County’s housing survey will close Friday regarding housing needs and preferences. Those individuals who live and work in Los Alamos County are invited to take the survey. A priority Strategic Goal of Council and of the Economic Vitality Strategic Plan is to increase the amount and types of housing options in the County. Survey questions are designed to assess local housing needs. Responses will help the County plan for new housing over the next 10 years.

COUNTY News:

The US Constitution mandates (Article 1, Section 2) that a headcount occur every 10 years of everyone residing in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas of the United States. 

This includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens and non-citizens. The population totals from the census determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives.

States also use the totals to redraw their legislative and school districts.
