Letter To The Editor: Why Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard Should Continue Serving Our House District 43

By BILL WADT
Los Alamos

I want to share why I will be voting for Stephanie Garcia Richard to continue serving as our State Representative.

The good news is that both candidates, Stephanie and Sharon Stover, are dedicated public servants who clearly care about children and youth and building a more vibrant economy that benefits everyone.

However, there are three major reasons why I think a vote for Stephanie is a vote to support our teachers and improve education and a vote for Sharon is a vote to support our Governor’s current education policies that denigrate our teachers and hurt our students. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Why I Support Rep. Garcia Richard

By MATTHEW WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

I would like to start my endorsement by stating that I am not a member of any political party, I am not even Independent, I am no party. Second, I want to be clear that my statements in no way represent any endorsement by the School Board or Los Alamos Public Schools.

Over the last three and a half years as a School Board member I have had a considerable amount of interaction with our State Representative, Stephanie Garcia Richard. I have always found her to be very attentive and responsive to the needs of our School District. I have had many interactions with

Letter To The Editor: Join Me In Voting ‘For’ Question 1

By JOANN JOHNSON
Los Alamos

I have lived in Los Alamos for more than 50 years. I have been actively engaged in community activities during that time. Nine years as Chairman of the Republican Party of Los Alamos, eight years as County Assessor, seven years on the Parks and Recreation Board and two terms on the LARSO Board of Directors, as well as many youth activities when my children were growing up.

I have seen many sheriffs come and go. Most were content to serve in the capacity assigned to our sheriff. A few have wanted to expand the duties of the sheriff. The right for Los Alamos to decide whether to Read More

Letter To The Editor: Watch Out For Hidden Property Tax Increase In January

By BRADY BURKE
Los Alamos

Back in August 2013, UNM-LA tried, and FAILED, to stick the property owners of Los Alamos with an increase to their property taxes to pay for whatever the University wanted to spend it on.

Now they want to try again by including a Mil Levy on the Los Alamos Public School Bond ballot in January, with the blessing of the Los Alamos Public School board.

UNM-LA wants the property owners of Los Alamos to foot the bill for their operation, maintenance, AND capital improvements through a Mil Levy. What’s worse is that the Los Alamos Public Schools

On a very hot June 18, during the Valles Caldera Marathon, a mother bear with her two cubs nearby, attacked marathoner Karen Williams who ran too close to one of her cubs. The injuries required Williams to be transported to UNMH for treatment.

Reasonable people would recognize that in this encounter the mama bear was just doing her thing. She was Read More

Letter To The Editor: What Is The U.S. Doing In The Middle East?

By Dr. T. DOUGLAS REILLY
Los Alamos

We are involved in various ways in the wars in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. In most we are fighting against the Islamic State* with a limited coalition. The US position is to demand that President Bashar Assad step down and we support rebel factions fighting for the same goal. The Russian position is to support Assad against all rebel groups; they also support the fight against the Islamic State.

Unfortunately for the Syrian civilians this means the slaughter and flight of refugees continues unabated. For whatever Realpolik reasons, the US provides arms and supplies Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement Of Anne Nobile For County Probate Judge

By ROBERT WELLS
Los Alamos

I enthusiastically support Anne Nobile for County Probate Judge. I have known Anne for a number of years and worked with her on behalf of Los Alamos schools issues; e.g., support of Jody Benson for the School Board, which was a successful endeavor. Anne’s credibility for serving this judicial position is reflected in her having been appointed Probate Judge by our bipartisan County Council. Having served as the County’s probate judge, she knows the job – and will faithfully continue to do the job needed and expected by County citizens.

In addition to my endorsement Read More
