The Art in Public Places Advisory Board has posted a new question on the County’s “Open Forum” webpage: Which Norris and Lois Bradbury sculpture should be recommended to the County Council for fabrication and installation at the new Los Alamos County Municipal Building?

The Board is seeking public comment on proposals received for this next set of historical sculptures.

Local Firefighters Shave Heads to Fight Childhood Cancer

The Los Alamos Fire Department is hosting a head-shaving event to benefit childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

The head-shaving event will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16 at White Rock Fire Station 3 on N.M. 4.

Fifteen firefighters including Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider have signed up to be shaved.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of Los Alamos will officially get underway as event volunteers and participants gather 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9 at Masonic Lodge (corner of 15th and Sage in Los Alamos) for a kickoff breakfast.

Relay For Life is the world’s largest grassroots fundraising movement. Relay For Life mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Members of the VFW Post 8874 and the Ladies Auxiliary, the Military Order of the Cooties and their Auxiliary, the Patriot Guard Riders, Paws and Stripes, the Blue Star Moms, the American Women Riders, and Santa Fe Harley Davidson visited the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital Feb. 17. 

As part of the Valentines for Vets program, we distributed many amenities to our hospitalized veterans in the spinal cord injury ward.

Empty Nesters Group to Learn Estate Planning

A new group, “Empty Nesters and Friends,” will meet 6:30-8 p.m. the second Monday of each month through June at Family Strengths Network (FSN.)

This is an opportunity to enjoy speakers and socialize. Empty Nester wannabes are welcome, too.

Historic District Guide Training Starts Today

Mandatory walking tour guide training will take place at 11 a.m. to noon today, Friday March 8.

Volunteer guides should gather promptly at 11 a.m. in the Nambe Room of Fuller Lodge, and will walk the tour route in the Historic District.

March 11 will be the kick-off date for these 1-hour long guided walks, which are being offered Monday through Saturday.

Tickets for these docent-guided tours are $10 for adults and will be on sale each day at the Historical Museum, 1050 Bathtub Row (next to Fuller Lodge), and can be obtained just

Sandia National Laboratories historian Rebecca Ullrich discusses Sandia’s transition from a Los Alamos division to an independent organization during a talk at 5:30 p.m., March 13 at the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos. The talk is part of the Laboratory’s 70th anniversary lecture series.

Sandia Labs’ origins are in Los Alamos’ Z Division, the engineering assembly and test support functions of the Manhattan Project.

Community Invited to Grand Opening for Multi-Purpose Covered Arena

The construction of the new Multi-Purpose Covered Arena near the North Mesa Stables is now complete.

The community is invited to join the Los Alamos County Council as they host a Grand Opening event for the new arena at 4 p.m., March 22 at Brewer Arena, 750 North Mesa Road.

A project website has been established to provide updates about this project at www.losalamosnm.us and click on “Projects.” The website will be updated whenever new information becomes available.

Underground Cable Short Caused Tuesday Power Outage

DPU News:

An underground cable termination caused Tuesday afternoon’s power outage that lasted nearly two hours and affected a portion of North Mesa.

Reported at 2:05 p.m., approximately one third of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities’ customers were without power on San Ildefonso Road beginning at and including the Del Norte/Del Sol neighborhoods and continuing east out to Big Rock Loop. DPU’s electric line crew repaired the cable and restored electricity by 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.

LAPSF Awards Microscopes to Aspen Teacher Through 'Great Ideas Grant' Program

As part of its "Great Ideas Grant" program, the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation awarded a grant for microscopes to Aspen Elementary School teacher Stacy Martens.

In her grant application last fall, Martens wrote, “The purpose of this grant is to allow 5th grade students at Aspen Elementary the opportunity to study cells in science.

LAPD Seeks Citizen Volunteers

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is looking for citizens for a variety of tasks, as they seek to expand a successful existing volunteers program into new police administration areas.

The goal of the department is to call upon citizen volunteers to help with daily non-emergency response tasks in order to allow police officers more time in the field concentrating on police enforcement and pro-active community outreach programs or services.

LAPD is seeking volunteers to assist in three areas:

  • Fingerprinting services;
  • Data entry; and
  • Food preparation in the detention

'Quartet' Proves Growing Old is Not for Sissies

Time can be a real enemy to a person. It will rob people of their health, mental faculties and loved ones.

But what “The Quartet” also proves is that time can be a friend. It can provide opportunity for second chances and new discoveries.

The film reveals it is never too late to live life fully.

The plot of “The Quartet” is pretty simple. A group of friends living in a retirement home for musicians prepare for an upcoming concert that celebrates Verdi’s birthday.

In White Rock we can get booze at three different places: Smith's, the gas stations and Bandelier Grill with a meal.

I wonder if White Rock is the only community in New Mexico that doesn't support a local bar?

We need some where that we can have a beer (not a six pack) and quiet conversation without four largescreen tv screens blaring the latest game at maximum volume.

I wonder if there are any hopes?

Every year children outgrow their soccer clothes and shoes and now there is a local opportunity to donate those items to children in Uganda.

The "Soccer for Uganda" drive is underway in Los Alamos and White Rock to collect used soccer clothes and shoes along with used soccer balls, cleats, shin guards, soccer socks and jerseys.   

      Los Alamos Drop-off: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at Crossroads Bible Church, 97 East Road.
