Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board Sets Area G Hearing In Santa Fe March 22

The Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board announced that it will hold a public hearing March 22 in Santa Fe.

The board will hear from its own staff and from LANL, DOE and NNSA officials on new and residual management and safety issues concerning Area G, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s hazardous waste disposal area.

A Department of Energy policy emphasizing continuous improvement requires its subsidiary organizations to keep track of what has gone wrong, what’s being done to correct the problem, and whether the matter has been resolved.

A new audit report by the Department of Energy Inspector General found that LANL has not developed an adequate program for managing such issues and their related corrective actions. LANL relies on its Performance Feedback and Improvement System, but the audit found that a “large percentage of issues were not effectively addressed.” Read More
