WIPP Update: Firefighters Complete Training

WIPP News:

Members of the WIPP fire department recently participated in Live Fire Training at the Permian Basin Regional Training Center south of Carlsbad.

Live Fire Training is a critical part of the training and certification process for WIPP firefighters and the facilities at the regional training center allowed the 29 participants to respond and fight fires in a realistic, but controlled environment.

Heinrich Secures Major Gains For National Labs, Military Bases, Defense Industry, And Border Security

SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced provisions he secured in the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that benefit New Mexico’s men and women in uniform, military installations, national laboratories, border security, and job creation throughout the state.

The bill was reported out of the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday and will now advance to the full Senate for consideration. The bill sets the Department of Defense spending

Los Alamos Staff Help Improve U.S. Capability To Detect Underground Nuclear Explosions

Los Alamos National Laboratory staff were instrumental in the fifth conventional explosion experiment as part of the NNSA’s Source Physics Experiment (SPE) series.

The SPE series, conducted at the Nevada National Security Site, advances the United States’ verification mission for detecting and understanding underground nuclear explosions.

“The goal of SPE is to understand the generation of S-waves from explosive sources,” said Catherine Snelson, a geophysicist at Los Alamos that led the Laboratory’s team.

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz To Dedicate NSTX-U At Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will dedicate the upgraded National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX-U) at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

The NSTX-U is the nation’s newest fusion energy experiment, a spherical tokamak that explores the creation of high-performance plasmas at temperatures hotter than the center of the sun. The event will include a tour of the NSTX-U facility and the dedication ceremony.

Udall, Heinrich Advance Funding For National Labs, Water Projects, WIPP In Energy And Water Appropriations Bill

SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich joined the Senate, in a 90-8 vote May 12 to pass the fiscal year 2017 funding bill for Los Alamos and Sandia national labs, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and several New Mexico water projects.

The Energy and Water Appropriations Act is critical for New Mexico and supports U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs nationwide. Udall helped write the legislation as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. A final version of the bill now must be worked out with the U.S.
