DOE Hosts Public Hearing Tonight at Holiday Inn Express

DOE News:

The Department of Energy is holding public hearings on a Surplus Plutonium Disposition Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.

The hearings are scheduled for:

  • Los Alamos on Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Holiday Inn Express, 60 Entrada Drive;
  • Santa Fe on Thursday, Aug. 23 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 3347 Cerrillos Road; and
  • Carlsbad on Aug. 28 hearing at the Pecos River Village Conference Center, 711 Muscatel Avenue.

The hearings will be 5:30-8 p.m. with a presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. and public comments beginning around 6:45 p.m.

The comment period ends Sept. 25.


Planned Steam Plant Outage Underway at LANL

LANL News:

Los Alamos National Laboratory's Utilities and Institutional Facilities Division began a planned steam outage for maintenance at 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.

The planned steam outage is scheduled to conclude at 7 p.m., Aug. 25.

The centralized steam distribution system must be shut down for required maintenance of equipment, including replacing and upgrading key components of the Laboratory’s utility system.

During the outage, there will be no heating and no process steam available in building systems served by the Steam Plant.

All buildings within the TA-3 and TA-43 area will be affected

Tonight is the Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. at Duane Smith Auditorium. The lecture, by Alex Fillippenko from UC Berkeley is on "Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe."

The Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture is open to the public at no charge.

The  J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee is dedicated to honoring the memory of Oppenheimer and his significant contributions to Los Alamos, the nation and the world. 

ChemCam Laser Sets Sights on First Martian Target

Members of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover ChemCam team have received the first photos from the instrument’s remote micro imager. The successful capture of ChemCam’s first 10 photos sets the stage for the first test bursts of the instrument’s rock-zapping laser in the near future.

Alan Bishop Selected to Lead LANL Science, Technology & Engineering Directorate

Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan announced today that after a yearlong, nationwide search, Alan Bishop has been selected to be the Laboratory’s next Principal Associate Director for Science, Technology, and Engineering (PADSTE.)

Bishop has been acting in that role since Aug. 29, 2011.

Over the course of a distinguished 30-year career as a research scientist and leader, Bishop has more than 700 publications in archival journals and has served as a guest scientist, guest scholar and visiting professor.

NRC to Discuss Apparent Violations at Harris Nuclear Plant

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a regulatory and pre-decisional enforcement conference with officials of Duke Energy to discuss apparent violations of NRC requirements involving the ventilation systems for facilities at the Harris nuclear power plant that would be staffed during emergencies.

The Harris plant, which is operated by Duke Energy, is located near New Hill, N.C., about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh.

Countywide Power Outage Hit Today

Update to 4:30 p.m. power outage caused by lightning to local substation: DPU customers still without power should call 311 or 662-8333 ASAP.

A major electrical power failure hit the entire County of Los Alamos at 1:50 p.m. today.

Word from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities is that a high voltage transmission service within Los Alamos National Laboratory was lost. LANL is investigating the cause.
