Daily Postcard: A Red-breasted Nuthatch perches recently on the trunk of a pinion tree on Barranca Mesa. Red-breasted Nuthatches move quickly over trunks and branches probing for food in crevices and under flakes of bark. They creep up, down, and sideways without regard for which way is up, and they don’t lean against their tail the way woodpeckers do. Flight is short and bouncy. Source: www.allaboutbirds.org. SFNF: FR 69 On Cuba Ranger District Closed For Elk Calving

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) reminds visitors to the Cuba Ranger District that Forest Road (FR) 69 is closed to all motorized vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), from May 15 to June 30 to protect elk cows during the calving season.

The seasonal road closure provides suitable habitat for elk cows during the calving season. During May and June each year, elk cows seek areas that have cover and forage. Daily Postcard: Brown Headed Cowbird In White Rock

Daily Postcard: A Brown Headed Cowbird singing recently at a residence in White Rock. Centuries ago this bird probably followed bison herds on the Great Plains, feeding on insects flushed from the grass by the grazers. Today it follows cattle, and occurs abundantly from coast to coast. Its spread has represented bad news for other songbirds: Cowbirds lay their eggs in nests of other birds. Heavy parasitism by cowbirds has pushed some species to the status of endangered and has probably hurt populations of some others. Source: www.audubon.org. Photo by Nancy Ann Hibbs Read More
