BLM Taos Field Office Opens More Sites And Services

BLM News:

TAOS — The Bureau of Land Management Taos Field Office announces that the Taos Junction Campground, Wild Rivers Inner Gorge primitive campsites, and all recreation site restrooms are now open.

In addition, the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center is now open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday.

Beginning May 28, the Wild Rivers Visitor Center resumes operations 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The BLM encourages the public to use exact change or a credit card when making purchases at the visitor centers.

SFNF Pecos/Vegas Continues Rowe Mesa Prescribed Burn

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are planning to continue implementation of the previously announced East Rowe Mesa prescribed burn located east of NM State Road 34 approximately 10 miles south of the village of Pecos.

Crews have treated approximately 1,830 acres on the 4,328-acre unit.

Hand and aerial ignitions on the remaining approximately 2,500 acres could begin as early as Monday, May 10.

County: Help Reduce Contamination In Yard Trimming Carts

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Environmental Services started the curbside yard trimming program in July of 2018. Since then, it has been very successful in collecting residential yard trimming.

About 4,788 or 69 percent of local residents have one-yard trimming cart at their residence. Environmental Services has collected 2,367 tons of residential brush since the start of the program.

The yard trimming material is collected and turned into mulch and sometimes into compost, but only if the material is clean.

Spring fishing conditions are underway in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

Streamflows are rising, especially in the Chama River above El Vado Lake. Lakes are warming up but still cold enough for trout to be cruising the shallows looking for food. Warmwater species like smallmouth bass and walleye are becoming more active. Insect hatches are happening, particularly the caddis hatch on the Rio Grande.
