Northern New Mexico National Forests Sign Final Decision

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — The Carson, Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests (SFNF) and Kiowa National Grasslands have released the final decision notice on a proposal to restore riparian, wetland and aquatic ecosystems in Northern New Mexico.

The signed decision opens the door to begin implementing multiple projects to improve aquatic and terrestrial habitat, watershed health and water quality across the three national forests.

PEEC Seeks Help Testing Updated Los Alamos Trails App

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) needs the community’s help to test out the updated Los Alamos Trails App.

PEEC has been working with students in New Mexico Highlands University’s Media Arts and Technology Department to update the app, and it is almost ready for release.

PEEC’s Los Alamos Trails App allows people to search for nearby trails that fit their hiking criteria, gives hiking directions and allows them to track their location while hiking.

New Mexico Tourism Dept. Takes Clean & Beautiful Grant Program To New Heights In FY22 With Record Participation

NMTD News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) has awarded $789,800 to a record 53 communities through the New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant Program for FY22.

Due to increased interest in the program, NMTD was able to support an additional 16 communities in FY22 compared to FY21. The $789,800 grant program budget for FY22 also represents a $11,100 increase from FY21. NMTD also saw a significant increase of grantee retention in FY22. Nearly 90 percent of FY21 grant recipients applied for the program in FY22, compared to a previous retention rate of 71 percent for FY21.

County Marks 3-Year Anniversary Of Yard Trimming Program

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County began its curbside yard trimming program in July 2018 to help the community reduce the amount of yard trimming material sent to the landfill.

By reducing the amount of yard trimming materials sent to the landfill, the county reduces the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere by avoiding hauling and disposal.

The yard trimming cart is a helpful tool for residents to dispose of pine needles, grass clippings, branches and leaves in an environmentally friendly way.

Bandelier National Monument is extending park visitor center hours to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Sunday, Aug. 1.

Good summer rains have produced a massive wildflower bloom in Bandelier’s high country that should last for at least several more weeks.
