AFRL Collaborates With NMT Astronomers On Observatory

KIRTLAND AFB – New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) astronomers are one-step closer to having their own high-powered window to space and the universe, after receiving congressional funding for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI).

The university will receive $6.2 million in congressional funds, to complete the first phase of the anticipated $30 million five-year project, to build three telescopes and two scientific instruments of the MROI in Socorro.

EM-LA & N3B Hold Public Meeting For LANL Individual Permit For Storm Water Nov. 30

The Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA) and cleanup contractor Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) will host the second of two required 2021 biannual meetings for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Individual Permit for Storm Water.

The meeting will be conducted virtually 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The Individual Permit authorizes discharge of storm water from LANL sites where historical industrial activities occurred.

SANTA FE — The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) Oil Conservation Division (OCD) announces new guidelines for operators to prevent, mitigate and reduce seismic activity caused by UIC class II injection disposal wells for produced water and other fluids generated during oil and gas production.

The state has recently seen seismic activity increase in the southeast close to the Texas border and in the north-central region, and data suggests that this activity is associated with UIC disposal operations.

New Report Tracks New Mexico Environment Department Performance In Protecting Public Health

N3B Los Alamos Continues Groundwater Sampling Along Rio Grande Amid Drought

Despite unseasonably low water levels this year, N3B Los Alamos has been able to navigate shallow sections of the Rio Grande and its tributaries to sample for contaminants related to historical operations at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

A storm is forecast to arrive shortly before Thanksgiving that will hopefully bring much-needed snow to higher elevations. It may not be long before the lakes and streams at higher elevations are frozen over and inaccessible due to snow. Ice fishing is probably a month or two away.
