SKI News:

VADITO  Sipapu Ski Resort officials announced the ski area is delaying its opening a week due to unseasonably warm temperatures.

The resort was originally scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 11, one of the earliest openings in resort history.

Temperatures will drop again this week, which is ideal for snowmaking, and snow is in the forecast  for tonight,Tues., Nov. 7.  Cold temperatures have allowed Sipapu’s crews to make snow already on beginner and intermediate trails: Thumper, Lower Bambi, and Butterfly.  They will continue snowmaking efforts as temperatures allow.

“Our mountain crews continue to monitor temperatures and we’ve made snow whenever we could,” Sipapu Mountain Manager John Paul Bradley said. “Our mountain team is working hard and continuing to prepare the mountain for opening day, which we’ve targeted as Sat urday, Nov. 18, as conditions allow. We feel confident with the progress we’ve already made that we’ll be able to open on the 18th.”

Sipapu Ski Resort is known for being the first resort to open and the last to close in New Mexico. Last year, Sipapu opened Nov. 19, continuing the 14-year trend as being the first to open in the state.

“Everyone at Sipapu is excited to kick off the ski season, and we’ll be able to make up ground as temperatures continue this cooling trend,” Bradley said. “Our mountain crews will be working around the clock to get the mountain ready for opening day. With the help of Mother Nature, coupled with our sophisticated snowmaking system, we will be able to provide a great ski season for our guests.”

New this Season!

Sipapu’s renovations that include a new 2,141 square foot addition to the historic Lodge will debut during the 2017/2018 winter season, housing a new rental shop with upgraded ski and snowboard rental equipment, a new Ticket Office, retail space, and improved traffic flow with more gathering space, new bathrooms, and a ski locker room.

Sipapu is continuing its commitment to enhancing its ability to teach others how to ski and snowboard, and is installing a new hand rail on the ski school’s magic carpet. The widening of the intermediate trail, “Beep Beep,” was also recently completed.
