PEEC News:

Enjoy electrifying activities this Saturday, July 14 at the Los Alamos Nature Center’s Electric Vehicle Show.

Spend the day exploring electric-powered cars and bikes, talking to owners, taking test drives and enjoying the variety of activities going on at the nature center. This event is free and is happening from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is brought to Los Alamos as a part of the Department of Public Utilities’ conservation-focused community outreach.

“There will be around 35 different electric vehicles, and around 12 of them will be available to test ride or drive,” Sandra West, a PEEC educator who is coordinating the Electric Vehicle Show, said.

The nature center’s parking lot will be filled with an array of electric-powered cars and bikes, including models from Tesla, Chevy, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, iZip bikes and more. The test drive area will be in the United Church of Los Alamos’s parking lot across the street from the nature center. If individuals would like to test drive a vehicle, they need to bring a valid driver’s license with them.

“I am excited to have so many different types of electric and hybrid vehicles in one place for people to see and discuss,” West said. “This is a great opportunity to get behind the wheel or on the pedals of an electric-powered or electric-assisted vehicle.”

In addition to touring vehicles, the family-friendly documentary “The Next Frontier: Engineering the Golden Age of Green” will play in the planetarium at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The film is free to see thanks to the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities. Activities for kids will be going on outside the nature center throughout the event.

In addition to attending the Electric Vehicle Show, Capitol Ford and Lincoln is hosting a ride and drive event Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14 in the Smith’s parking lot. For every test drive, they will donate $10 to the nature center’s Valley Education Fund. Vehicles will be available to test drive on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Electric Vehicle Show is part of Los Alamos ScienceFest’s Discovery Day. A free public Downtown Trolley from Atomic City Transit will be available on Discovery Day and individuals can ride from Ashley Pond to the nature center. ScienceFest celebrates Los Alamos’ heritage with history and science-based events for the entire family. This year’s signature sponsor is New Mexico Magazine and the theme is “Science Rules.”

Los Alamos MainStreet produces ScienceFest in collaboration with the Los Alamos Creative District, and Los Alamos County. The Pajarito Environmental Education Center, the non-profit that operates the Los Alamos Nature Center, is a partner in the festival and is hosting science-themed programs all week long.
