Obituary: Charles E. Hannaford Oct. 26, 2018

Charles E. Hannaford, 91, died peacefully on October 26, 2018, surrounded by his family. 

Charles was born in White Hall, Illinois and joined the U.S. Navy, with his parent’s permission, before he was 18. He served on the USS Barnes Aircraft Carrier, Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He served honorably until discharged after the war. 

He attended Shurtleff College in Alton, Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After college he worked for Olin Matheson Corporation in the research and development division working with explosives.

Charles moved to Los Alamos in 1957. He worked in the M1 Explosives Division for 33 years, until his retirement in 1990.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Shirley Hannaford. 

Charles is survived by his 3 sons, Charles A. Hannaford and wife Tannis, Jeffery Hannaford and wife Margaret, and Michael Hannaford and wife Pamela; grandchildren Cody Birdwell and husband Marc, Avery Hannaford, Kelsey Hannaford, Daniel Gilbert, and Zoe Angland; great-grandchildren Charles Birdwell, Benton Birdwell, and Penelope Gilbert-Angland.
