Feeling already the pressures of the Holiday Season? Bundle up and take the kids and relatives for an evening stroll on the country roads of Los Alamos’ unique North Mesa Stables Park.

Many stable owners decorate in the spirit of the Holidays. The barnyard residents munch hay in their corrals and are bedding down for the night. Horses, goats, sheep, cows -- you may even see a turkey that escaped Thanksgiving. It is truly a peaceful, unhurried and hassle-free way to unwind.

Don’t be rushed—this is best done on foot. Car headlights and dust kicked up from tires detract from the scene and make it harder to observe the animals and decorations. Put reflective clothing on everyone, and leave the vehicle in the Ball Fields parking lot off of North Mesa Road. Dogs must be on a leash, please.

This Sunday, Dec. 3, the Los Alamos Stable Owners will welcome you with campfires and a cheerful greeting. There will be a judged stable decorating contest kicking off the Holidays at the Stables. It is a public park, so folks are welcome to stroll the stables roads other times as well.

Please observe safe behavior for your own well-being and for the animals who come to see you from their enclosures:

  • Best not to give treats to the animals;
  • Stay on the roadways;
  • Do not enter corrals or barns; and
  • Be calm and quiet; horses like conversational tones, but are frightened off by shouting and sudden moves.

North Mesa Stables was established in early Los Alamos, 1946, and evolved to county park status in 1972. Structures, fences and animals are privately owned by Los Alamos County residents licensed by the County to keep horses here. The Rodeo Grounds, dressage and jumping areas, indoor arena, and trails access also are Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. Two historic early 20th Century homestead cabins can be found among the 120 stables.
