on January 11, 2018 - 7:34am
SANTA FE  New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) orchestra and choir are being featured as the 2018 Honor Choir and Honor Orchestra at the New Mexico Music Educators Association annual conference.
The students will perform at 3 p.m. Jan. 11, at Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico. The NMSA choir and orchestra will be performing for 1,500 music students and educators from around the state of New Mexico.
Each year NMMEA accepts taped recordings of the groups competing for this prestigious recognition. Under the direction of Choir Director Tina Sandoval and Orchestra Director Carla Lehmeier-Tatum these NMSA ensembles have received first place in past state competitions. They are both excited to share the talented NMSA students with music students and educators from all over the state!
The orchestra will be performing works by Astor Piazzolla, Edward Elgar, Carl Nelson, Dag Wiren and Russell Peck. The choir will perform an African welcome song in Swahili, Spanish songs by Joaquin Rodrigo and Javier Busto, John Rutter’s Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind, Ave Maria by Giancarlo Aquilanti sung in Italian, and an Armenian folk song arranged by Paul Carey. Ending the program is an exciting arrangement of Wheels of a Dream from the musical Ragtime.
