JAZZ BAND News:

The Los ALamos High School Jazz Band, Los Alamos Middle School Jazz Bands One and Two, and multiple combos from the Los Alamos Jazz Project performed Oct. 15 at Duane Smith Auditorium.

The music played by these different groups ranged from classic jazz standards, such as “Now is the Time” and “Moanin”, to Brazilian bossa nova style jazz, including Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Insensatez” (How Insensitive) and “Wave”.

Throughout the night, there were several outstanding improv solos performed by students, and the hard work, collaboration, and dedication of each combo were clearly evident.

LAHS Jazz Band Director Ryan Finn, LAMS Jazz Band One, and executive director of the Los Alamos Jazz Project was extremely proud of all of the student musicians who participated in this concert.

“Improvisation is the essence of jazz and a very different set of skills to teach,” Finn said. “Jazz education gives students the opportunity to practice and perform this style of music-making that is not easily accessible in a traditional band or orchestra class.”

Additionally, the audience was treated to a special performance by the Los Alamos Jazz Project faculty, which included Jeremy Bleich, Joey Farish, Ryan Finn, William Finn and Milton Villarubia.
