on May 7, 2019 - 5:35pm
COUNTY News:

This Saturday, May 18, Los Alamos County’s Emergency Management Division will be conducting an Active Shooter Full-Scale Exercise on the UNM-LA Campus in Los Alamos.

The campus will be closed to the public that day. This exercise is being conducted to assess the immediate response by law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel to a simulated active shooter event at the campus. The exercise will take place over seven hours, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m.

There will be setup and preparation activities beginning as early as 6:30 a.m., May 18.

The County wishes to alert residents of this exercise – especially those living, working or traveling near UNM-LA – to avoid causing any alarm. On the day of the exercise, individuals in this area may hear or observe the following:
  • Emergency vehicles;
  • Police and/or Fire Department teams;
  • “Caution” tape strung around the campus or adjacent area;
  • Loud noises and/or voices; and
  • Simulated gun fire.

For the public’s safety, the safety of all the exercise players, and for the preservation of the exercise site, the community is asked to refrain from entering the campus area on May 18. Signs will be posted near UNM-LA stating that this is only an exercise. Residents with questions or concerns may contact Cody Ulrich in the Emergency Management Division at cody.ulrich@lacnm.us or 505.662.8290.
