Staff Report

Los Alamos High School Gridiron and NJROTC Booster Clubs are selling Homecoming Mums this year. The mums are a longstanding tradition in Southern and Eastern New Mexico and come in two forms, a corsage to pin on or a garter to be worn on the arm or leg.

“Where I’m from in Southern New Mexico, guys give them to the girls they ask to the homecoming dance. Sometimes they ask their mothers or sisters to make them for them. Guys wear the garters on their arms. Sometimes their girlfriends or mothers make them for them,” one LAHS father said.

This year, the two Booster Clubs are making it easier to acquire the mum corsages and garters by selling them ready-made. There are two sizes, a mini and a standard and they can be purchased at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the JV Topper football game, 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Varsity Topper football game or 4:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the JV Topper football game.

Prices for the standard size mums are $40 and the mini size mums are $30.

Mums also can be purchased by emailing or calling 575.496.7937 Darlene Rodriguez.
