Consumer Protection Presentation At UNM-Los Alamos

UNM alumni Shaylyn Garcia Roy and Patrick Stewart are hosting “Consumer Security: Protecting the Citizens of New Mexico” Thursday, May 4 at UNM-Los Alamos in the Building 2 Lecture Hall.

The event begins with light refreshments at 5:30 p.m. followed at 6 p.m. by the presentation.

The UNM Alumni Association and the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office are joining forces to educate citizens in conjunction with Financial Literacy Month.

Topics discussed during this presentation will include recognizing the red flags of financial scams, consumer online safety, crime prevention, identity theft and fraud. They have offered these consumer protection presentations throughout the state, with their final stop Los Alamos.

Garcia Roy is the Community Outreach director for the Office of the New Mexico Attorney General. Garcia Roy served five years as an educator for Albuquerque Public Schools before joining the Office of the Attorney General. Throughout her two-and-half years with the Balderas Administration she has worked with her colleagues to build a community outreach program designed to fight cycles of crime, poverty and victimization through statewide education. 

Stewart is the Outreach Program advisor for the Office of the Attorney General. He has worked in state government for more than 20 years. Prior to joining the Office of the Attorney General, he was the bureau chief of the Special Investigations Division of the Office of the State Auditor, where he was responsible for investigating cases involving financial fraud and abuse of public resources by government officials and employees.

Stewart was appointed by Gov. Susana Martinez to the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board and is currently the board's vice chairman. He is also a member of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).
