Now researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) plan to make the moon even more reliable with a new project to measure its brightness.

The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) appeared to backpedal Tuesday on proposed changes to the New Mexico Science Education Standards, which are at odds with the Next Generation Science Standards developed by a consortium of states and the National Academy of Sciences.

New Mexico would be the 19th state to adopt the Standards.

In a study published today in the Journal of Geophysical Research Solid Earth, scientists at the University of Utah report that these small seismic signals can aid science.
 
As a record of wave motion in a lake, they can reveal when a lake freezes over and when it thaws.

School Board Talks Back To PED On Science Standards

Recently, the Public Education Department asked for comments about their proposed science standards for New Mexico public schools. Being that Los Alamos is a community that highly values science, the Los Alamos School Board has written a response to PED.

The School Board recommends adoption of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). (See resolution below)

During last week’s School Board Work Session, board members reviewed and unanimously accepted the draft resolution with feedback about PED’s proposed science standards.
