Thanking Russ: Holiday Benefit Concert At Unquarked Saturday

What would summer in Los Alamos be without Gordon Concerts? Children chasing each other and tossing snacks to ducks in Ashley Pond; friends pilng onto picnic blankets with wine and beer; and the smell of local food trucks in the air while everyone taps their feet to music.
 
There is no better representation of Los Alamos than what Russ Gordon spent 28 years of his life giving to this community, summer after summer. And now, it’s our turn to thank Russ.

The Los Alamos Big Band is presenting a Christmas Dance, 7:30-10:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall, 3700 Canyon Road in Los Alamos. 

The public is invited and encouraged to attend; even if you are not a dancer, please come to listen and enjoy the authentic Big Band sound. The proceeds will benefit the IHM Youth Program. Admission is $15/person, $10/student, and $5 each for children under 12 years.

Join the LAHS Olions for its 2017 winter show: "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play!" This fun play is set in a Christmas-themed live "radio show" based on the classic film, "It's a Wonderful Life." There will be fun voices, noises, and silliness, making the show perfect for the whole family! It will show at 7 p.m.

Los Alamos Choral Society Announces New Director

After almost seven months of uncertainty, the Los Alamos Choral Society (LACS) has a new director. Steven Paxton, the unanimous choice of the Choral Society Board of Directors, will take over in late February.

He succeeds Mary Badarak, a popular director at LACS for more than a decade.

MUSIC News:

Nothing says Christmas quite like the sound of a choir performing carols.

This choir happens to be composed of tubas and euphoniums and is performing in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22 in Kelly Hall at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church. There is no admission charge.

The group came together in 2002, and has played at various venues throughout Los Alamos every holiday season since then.

Mountain Choir Sings Carols Downtown Dec. 14

MOUNTAIN CHOIR News:

The Mountain School Choir, which recently sang with the Los Alamos High School choir at the Municipal Building for the Holiday Tree Lighting, is performing Christmas Carols beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in front of the downtown post office on Central Ave.

The choir will walk down the street singing in front of businesses, cross the road and sing in CB FOX, walk on that side of the street and will finish will a few songs in Starbucks.

Mountain Choir invites the community to come downtown Thursday evening to hear the students and enjoy the holiday season with singing!

Interfaith Christmas Concert Saturday

An Interfaith Christmas Concert is 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Mormon Church at 1967 18th St. in Los Alamos. 
 
This free event will have musical numbers from members of White Rock and Los Alamos communities. Performances include a variety of instruments, including piano, cello, ukulele and a bell choir. There also will be soloist and singing performances and opportunities for the audience to sing some classic Christmas music. The performers vary in age from 9 years to adults. Families and children are encouraged to attend. 

Shashi Light Charles Performs At Library Saturday

Shashi Light Charles will play and sing a free concert 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Mesa Public Library in the Upstairs Rotunda.
 
Her program will include holiday songs and some original work, all presented in her unique jazz-folk fusion style.
 
Charles fell in love with music at an early age, which beckoned her into singing (badly but passionately) and plinking on the piano and plucking on the guitar.

The Los Alamos Community Winds would like to invite everyone to a celebration of the holiday season with their seventh Annual Holiday Prism concert. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday Dec. 9 at Crossroads Bible Church.

An collection of holiday favorites will be performed by the Community Winds, small instrumental ensembles and soloist, with a special vocal appearance by Rene LeClaire.

The Prism Concert format allows smaller groups of musicians to perform pieces that showcase their instrument’s best qualities.

How many adults can truthfully say they have done some challenging activity—sports, chess, fitness training, learn a new skill set for 100 consecutive days without fail?
 
Probably most would have to answer “no”. However, two young piano students in Los Alamos have accomplished just that. Sean Lo, 7, and Charles Cai, 12, have both completed a national “challenge” to practice the piano for 100 consecutive days.

Sangre De Cristo Chorale Performs Concert Dec. 9-10

The Sangre de Cristo Chorale will present its holiday concert, “Reverence and Joy”, at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe and at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 at the United Church of Los Alamos.

From 16th-century sublime music to contemporary ridiculous favorites, “Reverence and Joy”, is a celebration of some of the best-loved holiday music featuring pieces by John Rutter, Franz Biebl, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and others. Highlights of the sublime include such sacred works as Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and Luis de Victoria’s “O magnum mysterium”.

White Rock resident and Pojoaque Valley High School Concert Band Director Debra Minyard invites shoppers to the arts and crafts fair this weekend.
 
“We have 30 vendors registered so far, so come on out and join us for a day of shopping and holiday cheer!” Minyard said.
 
Crafts, music, food and a visit from Santa are all on the agenda for the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. festivities in the Frank B. Lopez Auditorium at Pojoaque Valley Middle School on N.M. 502.
 
“The fundraiser is to benefit the PVHS Band as we raise funds for bus trips and entrance fees to festivals,”

WinterFest is a family-oriented holiday event that celebrates winter in Los Alamos and kicks off with the annual Creche Show noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the Los Alamos LDS Church, followed by a Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. at Crossroads Bible Church. Entry to both events is free. Stop by the Karen Wray Art Gallery and enjoy the Christmas in Los Alamos Open House anytime between noon and 5 p.m. Friday as well.

The Los Alamos Big Band is presenting a Holiday Dance, Saturday night, Dec. 2, at Fuller Lodge. The dance begins at 7 pm, just after the WinterFest Holiday Lights parade.

Admission is $15/couple, $10/single, $5/student. Admission is free for middle-school children and younger with a paying adult. Tickets are available at the door.

LAAC Hosts Holiday Open House Dec. 2

Santa Fe Community College Chamber singers present a Winter Concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 in Room 727 on the SFCC campus, 6401 Richards Ave. 

The program features performances of SFCC’s choral chamber singers who have participated in classes and rehearsals during the past semester.

The concert is presented by the School of Arts, Design and Media Arts. Singers will be directed by SFCC instructor Laurie Romero.
