Bandelier Releases Holiday Schedule

BANDELIER News:

With the new snow, and holidays coming up, the rangers at Bandelier are hoping people will come and enjoy the park.

"Winter days can be beautiful in Bandelier," Park Superintendent Jason Lott said. "Over the holidays, with everyone looking for places to go with family and friends, we hope they'll come on down."

The shuttle buses have ended until next March, so visitors can now drive directly to the Visitor Center area. The Visitor Center, bookstore, gift shop and snack bar are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the canyon area.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation reports that N.M. 502 is open at the present time.

 

Inclement weather forced the closure of N.M. 502 for a short time earlier today.
 
Because the situation can change at anytime, NMDOT is asking motorists to check with nmroads.com before traveling to determine which roads are closed.

NMOHVA Files Lawsuit Against Santa Fe National Forest Travel Management Decision

The New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance (NMOHVA) filed a lawsuit against the Santa Fe National Forest Dec. 11 in Federal District Court.

The lawsuit contests the Forest's Travel Management decision signed by Forest Supervisor Maria T. Garcia June 12 and upheld by the Region 3 Appeal Deciding Officer Oct. 2.  

Filing a lawsuit is a major commitment of NMOHVA's time and money. The NMOHVA Board thought long and hard about this and then voted unanimously to go ahead with legal action.

WASHINGTON D.C. – A report released this morning by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), originally requested by U.S. Sen. Tom Udall and Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., describes glaring shortfalls in the data publicly available on hardrock minerals and highlights lost revenue from extraction on federal lands.
 
In 2011, Udall and Grijalva requested the report from GAO to identify the amount and estimated dollar values of minerals extracted from federal land.

New Mexico Republican Party leaders elected retired businessman John Billingsley as state party chairman during Saturday’s biannual meeting in Albuquerque of the state party’s central committee. He replaces outgoing Chairman Monty Newman.

Billingsley has been chairman of the Lincoln County GOP as well as the state party’s first vice chairman for the last two years. He also served as U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce’s 2008 Senate race campaign manager.

The county has finally reached the drop-dead point with regard to the redo of N.M. 502 from Knecht to Tewa Loop.
 
The hastily generated design created by PW (Public Works) in January was done without serious critiquing, endorsed by the Transportation Board under questionable circumstances, and approved quickly by the Council as it “needed to rush this through urgently to insure funding,” even as some of us indicated that it would not meet LOS.

SFNF to Burn 3,500 Acres of Hazardous Fuels

SFNF News:

Fire managers plan to begin ignitions Tuesday, Dec. 11 within the Coyote Ranger District to treat hazardous fuels with prescribed fire.

The total acreage includes Mesa Camino and Gallina WUI prescribed burn project areas. Depending on conditions, either one or the other project area will be treated next week.

This is an ongoing project that began 10 years ago. Approximately 75 percent of the project has been completed in prior treatments.

Gallina WUI, Mesa Camino, Coyote Ranger District:

  • Approximately 50 to 100 acres are to be treated per day when conditions are favorable

NMDOT Prepared for Arctic Blast

SANTA FE - The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is prepared for the arctic front that’s scheduled to hit New Mexico on Sunday. 

The biggest impact is expected to be seen in NMDOT District 4, headquartered in Las Vegas, which encompasses the northeast corner of the state.

Approximately 80 dump trucks with snowplows and salt and cinder spreaders in District 4 are loaded and ready to go. All patrol crews that could be impacted have been preparing for the storm, readying vehicles and receiving briefings on both weather and expected roadway conditions.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Ojo Caliente highway maintenance patrol was honored Dec. 6 with a special recognition plaque presented by the Rio Arriba County Board of Commissioners at a board meeting in Espanola. The patrol was honored for its good work and service to the local communities.

I-25 / St. Francis Drive Update

NMDOT News:

NMDOT is shutting down detour lanes at the I-25 / St. Francis Drive interchange this afternoon and diverting traffic back on to I-25.

Traffic will be funneled into single lanes on northbound and southbound I-25. Open and closed lanes may alternate as the project winds down.

All lanes on I-25 at this key interchange in Santa Fe should be re-opened by Christmas, weather permitting. The $6.1 million rehabilitation project will enhance public safety and prolong the life of four bridges on I-25 and one bridge on the St. Francis Drive northbound off-ramp.

FBI Seeks Public's Help

FBI News:

The Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations and the FBI are investigating an armed robbery that occurred Nov. 30 at the Sonic Drive-In in Shiprock.

Shortly after midnight, two individuals dressed in black and with blue bandanas over their faces entered the restaurant on Highway 491.

Witnesses said one of the robbers carried an AK-style assault rifle.

The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money and may have gotten into a silver or white four-door sedan.

Local Efforts Should Guide Decisions on Lesser Prairie Chicken

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall announced Friday that local conservation efforts should help guide the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) proceedings on a draft rule review process that would list the Lesser Prairie Chicken as a “threatened” species under the Endangered Species Act.
