Life After 50: Take A Second, Make A Difference…

As we have passed Mother’s Day and Teacher Appreciation week, we look ahead to graduation.

Several years ago, I worked for the schools and led a great program called, WEB Crew. This year’s graduating class were the first students to be welcomed into the middle school as seventh graders, leaders of the program in eighth grade, and welcomed into high school, as freshmen, by Link Crew.

Some went on to become those leaders graduating this month. There were about 40 students that I had that leadership connection with, and I salute them all.

Canine Rattlesnake Avoidance Training In White Rock May 30

SUBLIME CANINE News:

Worried about your dog and rattlesnakes?

JJ Belcher of Sublime Canine, Tucson, Ariz., is scheduled to conduct Snake Avoidance training May 30 in White Rock. 

This Rattlesnake Avoidance training is done with live Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes that have had their venom glands surgically removed by a licensed exotic animal vet.

“The training is safe, effective and humane for the snake and the dogs that they work with,” Sublime Canine said.

Dogs are trained to recognize and avoid the sight, smell and sound of a rattlesnake.

LAPS: May Is Mental Health Month

LAPS News:

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five Americans live with a mental illness.

In an effort to raise awareness about mental illness and educate the public on ways to help, NAMI has launched a “You are Not Alone” campaign during the month of May as part of Mental Health month.

Los Alamos Public Schools is supporting this campaign by providing resources and awareness.

SANTA FE — MANA del Norte is accepting scholarship applications for the 2020-21 academic year.

Three of the 9 finalists in the 2020 Supercomputing Challenge held virtually April 28 were from Los Alamos High school.

Jennifer Necker, a 2017 Los Alamos High School graduate, is the recipient of a merit-based 2020-21 Jean Boswell P.E.O. state scholarship for college junior and senior women.

In a statewide, exceptionally competitive field, the selection committee in its notification letter wrote that Necker is an “extraordinary candidate”.

Bear Spotted Laying On Bird Feeder On 41st Street

During a recent safari hunt, a bear is spotted trying to hide in plain sight laying on top of a bird feeder at a residence on 41st Street. Los Alamos Public Schools recently launched the Safari Hunt for Kids and it is growing fast across the community. This activity is similar to a scavenger hunt. With a large portion of the world’s population now living under lockdown to contain the coronavirus, this type of Safari Hunt activity is popping up all over the world.
