Reagor: About The Pedestrian Retail Overlay Vote

By DAVID REAGOR
Los Alamos County Councilor

In your article about our Aug. 10 meeting of the county council the major issue was the PRO (Pedestrian Retail Overlay), an ordinance to create a pedestrian overlay of the downtown.

As discussed at length in our town hall and the pages of this paper, this ordinance will restrict the ability of a landlord to find tenants for ground floor spaces.

There are two arguments against this type of restriction. One argument is that courts have ruled that this is a taking of the property rights of the landowners and that compensation is owed. This is the argument made Read More

The APP board spoke with representatives at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), the operators of the Nature Center, and PEEC strongly supported both the donation and the proposed location.

In June of 2020, during the pandemic, Los Alamos County installed Read More

Update On Water Line Breaks In North Mesa

COUNTY News:

As of 7 p.m. today, water has been restored to customers on Alamo Road.

Crews continue to work to repair the water line on Camino Redondo and estimate water pressure to be restored to these customers by 8:15 p.m. today.

DPU offers the following consideration to customers when water is restored:

  • Water may at first appear murky due to entrained air. This problem will resolve itself in a day or so.
  • For a day or two there may be a small amount of sediment or rust in the water that has been stirred up from the bottom of the water main.  While aesthetically unpleasant, it does not pose a health risk.

Izraelevitz: Many Tools Are Available To Promote Retail In Los Alamos, But Require Conversation And Collaboration

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos County Councilor

There was vigorous debate at County Council Chambers last Tuesday night regarding a proposed Pedestrian Retail Zone. Although the proposal to prohibit non-retail activity on the first floor of certain downtown segments failed, those with the intestinal fortitude to attend (or watch remotely) the lengthy proceedings learned a lot about the problems and possible solutions to re-invigorating our county’s retail environment. This meeting was the culmination of many, many community conversations among local property owners, businesses, Read More
