Bill Focusing On Preserving Native Language Passes New Mexico House Of Representatives House Friday

SANTA FE — A bill that would help preserve Native languages and fairly compensate teachers who hold a Native American Language Certificate passed the New Mexico House of Representatives Friday with a unanimous vote.
HB 60 would increase the salaries for teachers of Native languages by making those who hold a certificate in Native language and cultures, also known as a 520 certificate, eligible for a level two license salary.
The bill also would put the tribes and pueblos in charge of establishing proficiency criteria and renewal procedures for the 520 certificate. Read More
