Recent Rainstorms Allow Medio Fire Crews To Begin Repairs

SFNF News:

Intermittent rain over the past few days continues to delay planned burnout operations to secure the western side of the Medio Fire area, now 55 percent contained. Until fuels have dried out, crews are shifting their efforts to suppression repair.

The recent rain has both helped and hindered operations on the Medio Fire, sparked by lightning Aug. 17 on the Rio en Medio Trail in the Española Ranger District. SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials have announced this afternoon 107 additional positive tests for COVID-19.

Los Alamos County remains at 27 cases today that have tested positive for COVID-19.

Today’s update announces 1 additional deaths reported in New Mexico related to COVID-19.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported today the most recent cases:  

  • 22 new cases in Bernalillo County
  • 28 new cases in Chaves County
  • 6 new cases in Curry County
  • 6 new cases in Doña Ana County
  • 4 new cases in Eddy County
  • 18 new cases in Lea County

Final Update: Caja Fire Now 100 Percent Contained

SFNF News:

The Caja Fire is now 100 percent contained, firefighters are monitoring the perimeter to make sure the lines are holding and the edges are cold. As temperatures warmed today, crews also were keeping an eye out for hot spots in the fire’s interior.

Crews will continue to monitor the Caja Fire over the next few days on the Colorado Peak on the Caja del Rio Plateau in the Española Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF).

This will be the final update on the Caja Fire unless conditions change.
