WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the House passed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act by a 329-73 vote.

This bipartisan legislation establishes pregnant workers’ right to reasonable workplace accommodations, including excusing workers from lifting heavy objects or standing for long periods of time, allowing more frequent meal or bathroom breaks, and modifying work schedules.

New Mexico August Unemployment Rate 11.3 Percent

NMDWS News:

New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 11.3 percent in August 2020, down from 12.7 percent in July and up from 4.8 percent in the previous year.

The national unemployment rate in August was 8.4 percent, down from 10.2 percent in July and up from 3.7 percent in August 2019. 

Total nonagricultural payroll employment fell by 70,500 jobs, or 8.2 percent, between August 2019 and August 2020. Losses came from both the public and the private sector.

The private sector was down 63,600 jobs, or 9.4 percent.

SANTA FE — Earlier this month, Jason Herman of the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) Ground Water Quality Bureau offered his expertise by providing a state perspective on an article written by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientists.

The article, titled “A disposable acetylcholine esterase sensor for As(III) determination in groundwater matrix based on 4-acetoxyphenol hydrolysis,” describes a disposable field sensor developed by the researchers that can easily and inexpensively detect arsenic in water samples.

Office For Victims Of Crime Awards Nearly $3 Million To Support Victims Of 2019 Colorado School Shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Justice Department’s Office for Victims of Crime, a division of the Office of Justice Programs, Thursday announced it has awarded a $2,878,767 Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program grant to the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice to assist victims of the 2019 shooting at STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

May 7, 2019, one student was killed and eight others were injured when two students fired weapons in a Highlands Ranch classroom.
