Letter To The Editor: Developing COVID-19 Immunity

BY JOHN DAVEY
Los Alamos

Los Alamos Community,

I am frustrated by our government’s (federal, state, and local) lack of leadership on dealing with the communication of the scientific reality of this pandemic.

I see on TV media hour by hour tabulation of numbers infected and numbers of deaths. I’ve watched Federal and State governmental representatives declaring we are on top of the virus by showing the infection rate going down in certain states.

In reality, we are not “on top of the virus” but rather we are simply slowing the spread of this contagious virus in some states. Being “on top of the virus” Read More

Gessing: New Mexico’s Senseless Shutdown Status

By PAUL J. GESSING
Rio Grande Foundation

New Mexico is among the most tightly shut down states in the entire country. This is according to the website Wallethub, which has been ranking the various US states on how “open” or “closed” they are.

New Mexico was tied with Washington State as the 44th most open or, with the inclusion of Washington, DC, 7th least open.

There is a clear partisan divide among the “openers” and “closers”. Until you hit Ohio, the 14th most “closed” state all of the “closers” are led by Democrats. And, while Wisconsin (with a Democrat governor) jumped to the top of the list of “open” Read More

By Peter Nguyen and Nina Pham
Owners of Top Nail & Spa

Top Nail & Spa were among the victims of the March 29 crime spree that hit seven local businesses in Los Alamos.

The Los Alamos community rallied to support these businesses after the break-ins. We at Top Nails appreciate the efforts of the community, LACDC, Los Alamos Main Street and Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.

The attack couldn’t have come at a worse time when businesses across Los Alamos were already struggling with closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We truly appreciate how the Los Alamos community Read More

Op-Ed: Pandemic Reveals We Need Health Security

As a hospital pharmacist, I am seeing what the COVID-19 pandemic reveals: the unacceptable weaknesses in our health care system.

To address them, a good place to start is by evaluating the mindset and structural issues that have led us here.

Let’s start with mindset. Rugged individualism is an aspect of American culture that has been ingrained in our society. Having grown up on a ranch in Cliff, N.M. I learned the value of self-reliance, independent critical thinking, and perseverance at a young age.

However, is an individualist Read More

Letter To The Editor: Preeminent Science Lab Ignores Basic Health Science

By RICHARD BONNER
Concerned Citizen

We are visiting Los Alamos while full-time living in our motorhome and responsibly “social distancing” as we travel.

While camped at the White Rock Visitor Center last evening, we drove to see the town of Los Alamos and around the Highway 501 to State Road 4 loop through Bandelier Monument and back to White Rock.

Doing so required us to drive through a security check point on the west side of Los Alamos. How ironic and disturbing that one of our country’s preeminent science laboratories requires users of a public road to come face to face with a young security guard Read More
