Many stories about women in the Manhattan Project, such as those of the “Calutron Girls” of Oak Ridge and the “Computers” of Los Alamos, report that the women did not realize the enormity of the project they were working on.

Whether turning dials on big machines or crunching huge mathematical calculations, the women knew they were contributing to the “war effort” but did not know they were assisting in the making of an atomic bomb.

That is not the case with Charlotte Serber, who had an important Read More

Council Column: COVID, Gas Rate Increase, Agenda Items

By Chair Randall Ryti
Los Alamos County Council

COVID Update. Since the Jan. 26 Council meeting, I have asked that Manager Burgess arrange for Emergency Manager Beverley Simpson to present a report to Council at the beginning of each Council Meeting. Ms. Simpson has also made these reports available on the Los Alamos County pandemic web page. These reports will continue so that Council and the public can be informed on trends and progress in cases and vaccinations.

We have good news on both the number of cases and the number of vaccine doses available in Los Alamos County. The cases have been low Read More

By SEAN WILLIAMS
Los Alamos County Councilor

Like thousands of others, I quit playing Magic: The Gathering following the release of the Mercadian Masques set. And like the beebles, I played again briefly around the Unhinged set.

I bring this up because one of my goals as a councilor is openness, or if you like, demystifying the county government. Now that the county has achieved turquoise status, I feel more comfortable organizing in-person events—to listen to your concerns, and to share what I’ve learned.

With the help of White Rock Toys and Gaming at 108 Longview Dr., I’ll be holding a weekly Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

As I remember, it was in March of last year that things abruptly changed. I was driving back that night from Albuquerque after having watched a state high school basketball tournament.

We had been informed that there would be no more fans allowed to attend the tournament games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We were about to begin an unknown journey that none of us were looking forward to.

After a year of lockdowns, state-park closures, limited camping areas and restrictions on other outdoor recreation opportunities, things are looking Read More

Emotional Retreat: Finding Hope In Times Of Darkness

By DR. TED WIARD
Golden Willow Retreat

Hope is a topic that has been arising within many conversations lately in the therapeutic world as well as in the collective consciousness within society.

Hope is often thought of as a feeling of expectation, and desire for a specific thing to happen, or as a verb, wanting something to happen or be the situation. It seems the pandemic has corroded the foundation of trust that everything will be okay, and that people can make it through this difficult time. With the weakening of the foundation, hope appears to have dwindled, causing higher levels of depression, Read More
