Sheriff Files Proposed Amendment to Charter

Sheriff Marco Valentino Lucero filed in the Los Alamos County Clerk's Office Thursday a proposed amendment to Los Alamos County Charter 304.3 “Duties of the Sheriff and Police.”

Current Charter Reading:

Duties of the Sheriff, Police department and Peace Officers. The Council shall establish as a department of the County, [sic] a Police Department to be charged with conserving the peace and enforcing the laws of the State and the enforcing the laws of the State and the ordinances of the County.

Springtime 2012: 50 Hikes in the Los Alamos Area

Many years ago, Frances Arnold, Carol Carlson and Maxine Ellis created a 50 Hikes trail list for friends who wanted to explore our beautiful mesas, canyons, and mountains. The Santa Fe National Forest later adopted the list as a convenience for visitors.
 

Despite subsequent publication of a number of hiking books for the area, the list still serves its purpose as a quick introduction to the east side of the Jemez Mountains. As years go by, changing conditions require that the list be revised periodically.

Upcoming Kiwanis Programs and Events

PEEC‘s Summer Adventure Program Offers Financial Aid

This summer parents can enroll their fourth through sixth graders on an outdoor adventure with the Pajarito Environmental Education Center's Nature Center.

Youth can explore the Rio Grande, June 4-8 or the Valles Caldera June 11-15.

PEEC has established two scholarship programs for children of families with incomes that might limit their ability to participate:

  • Income-based Full Scholarship
  • Public Service Partial Scholarship for the children of policemen, firefighters and public school employees

Annual 8th Grade Athletic Night Set For May 22

The Los Alamos Athletic Department is holdong its 8th grade Athletic Night at 6 p.m., Tuesday May 22 in the Smith Auditorium. 

The LAHS Athletic Department asks anyone with a son or daughter who will be in the 9th grade as of the 2012-13 school year to attend the meeting.  

The meeting will begin with general information and then each of the coaches of the LAHS sports teams will have a table in the high school lobby for parents to visit. 

The coaches will answer questions about the upcoming school year, summer questions, etc.

Energy Community Alliance Members Tour B Reactor

The local contingent of community, business and civic leaders visiting Richland, Wash., this week as part of the Energy Alliance Committee conferance discussing the possible inclusion of Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Hanford as a unit in the national park system had an opportunity to tour the B Reactor at Hanford today. The B Reactor is one of the most historic buildings at Hanford. It was given the code name, "105-B" during World War II.

Los Alamos Community Winds Collaborates with Los Niños de Santa Fe

Los Alamos Community Winds will present "Cinco de Mayo Celebrating a Century of the Music and Dance of Mexico and New Mexico,” at 7 p.m., Saturday May 5, at Crossroads Bible Church.

Los Nños de Santa Fe will perform traditional Mexican dances, directed and choreographed by Antonina Valdez Romp, on three pieces (Danzón no. 2 by Arturo Marquez, Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo, and La Bamba de Vera Cruz by Terig Tucci).

Los Niños de Santa Fe (LNSF) is a local program dedicated to preserving traditional dances of Mexico.

FAMILY YMCA News

In 2011, three people a week requested financial assistance at The Family YMCA so their children could participate in after school, or camp, or so they could participate in healthy programs.

In the end, 148 people were awarded more than $75,000 in assistance.

The Y is running its annual Strong Kids Campaign, a fundraising drive to support these scholarships.

“Of these 148 people, 74 were kids in our camp or afterschool program,” said volunteer campaign chair Emily McGay, “these 74 kids require seven staff.

Local Contingent Joins Manhattan National Park Conference in Richland, Wash.

A contingent of community, business and civic leaders arrived in Richland, Wash., today to confer on the possible inclusion of Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Hanford as a unit in the national park system. Participants belong to the Energy Community Alliance and were treated to a local  Richland theater group's performance of the historical skit "Tale of Three Cities" at the conference opening event.

Rotary Crab Fest Fundraiser Breaks Record

The Los Alamos Rotary Club's thrid annual “All-You-Can-Eat Crab Fest” fundraiser held Feb. 26 at Central Avenue Grill drew a record crowd and topped previous years in terms of proceeds from the dinner and silent and live auction events. Crab Fest Chair Skip King, center, and Queen Crab Linda Hull present Rotary President Thurman Talley with a check for $14,412.16 during Tuesday's Rotary Club luncheon meeting at Fuller Lodge. Last year's Crab Fest extravaganza raised about $11,000. Proceeds from the annual fundraiser benefit local scholarships and the Los Alamos High School Memorial Garden.
