Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Shipments Resume

on December 4, 2017 - 10:46am

Shipments from Los Alamos National Laboratory to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad resumed Nov. 8. In this photo, the initial shipment is loaded into a Trupact-II container at the Laboratory’s Technical Area 55 Nov. 7. The first shipment was successfully delivered to WIPP and contained sealed radioactive sources from the Off Site Source Recovery Program (OSRP). OSRP is a NNSA program managed by LANL. Since 1997, OSRP has been able to recover more than 39,400 sources from more than 1,390 sites, including all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and 25 foreign countries. These are excess, unwanted, abandoned, or orphan radioactive sealed sources that pose a potential risk to national security, health and safety.
