Home Country: Hot Summer Day

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

It’s the heat that defines us this month. It greets us at daybreak with its promise, but in an hour or so, it bears down on our shoulders and makes us dream of shade and something cold to drink.

The best thing about our hot season, however, are evenings when most of the earth cools, and that breeze slides in off the mesa and caresses our cheeks. Then it’s time to sit, and laugh, and tell stories and just be with someone we love. Then is the culmination of a day we can be proud of.

Inside each of us, we silently and privately applaud ourselves, because the hot day tried us, but we did Read More

Fr. Glenn: Just The Facts, Ma’am

By Fr. Glenn Jones

Well, first of all … Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there! A blessed task and duty is fatherhood, as you are entrusted by God for the safekeeping and cultivation of those little images of Him … and of you and mom. “In His Image” in reference to God is in the spiritual being and the internal goodness within all persons … no matter how much it may be hidden. In your image, dads, by what you and mom imprint upon them—in physical likeness, yes, but ever so much more in values and wisdom.

When we consider wisdom, we understand that it requires truth and facts, else it is no wisdom at all.  Read More

Editor’s note: When Dave Fox of Los Alamos was a young boy, he and his cousin would pay one visit each summer to their grandmother and grandfather in Mobile, Ala.

“Twas an overnight trip; left St Louis, Mo (our hometown) in time for dinner followed by the heavyweight sounds of a train thru the night, stopping throughout the trip at the small towns of Mississippi,” Fox recalled. “At many a stop, from the top bunks of our Pullman sleeping car we’d stare out at the night-lit Read More
