Zero Waste Team: Family Food Waste Prevention Pledge

From The County Zero Waste Team:

It’s that time again, time to take a look at what we might do to improve our lives in the New Year.

Often, we make resolutions to improve our health, save money for things we want, make time for our families or work to heal the planet.

How about accomplishing all those goals with one money and time saving resolution, that improves health and the environment?

It’s probably not one you’ve thought much about, but it is powerful: Waste Less Food.

In the U.S., households waste an average of $1,500 per year on food they don’t eat. That’s like throwing $125 out your car window every Read More

Grant: Let’s Get Aligned For The New Year!

By ELIZABETH GRANT, LPCC
Los Alamos

“A lot of the conflict you have in your life exist simply because you’re not living in alignment; you are not being true to yourself.” –Steve Maraboli

Let’s Get Aligned for the New Year!

Ask people about New Year’s resolutions and they roll their eyes. It’s understandable as it’s estimated that roughly 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions and only 8 percent succeed.

Resolutions are largely ineffective because people pick them from a place of should and no one likes to be should upon. “Should” is associated with external places of validation and Read More

Fr. Glenn: Motivations

By Father Glenn Jones

Well, another year has begun … this one beginning a little bit … ummm … “differently” than most. What’s that old curse … “May you live in interesting times?” As we get older, we start to appreciate the “uninteresting” and predictable times a heck of a lot more. Well … different each to his own—we all have our motivations.

Speaking of motivations, I was watching a series on the TV the other night in which a powerful politician was requesting assistance of a very socially-minded minister in accomplishing a certain goal. Because that task would have necessarily taken the minister Read More

New Mexico Harvest News:

Do we have a broken food system? Some would argue it has been broken for years.

If COVID taught us anything, it’s how much we rely on necessities like fresh food, medicines, and even toilet paper. Prices for foods like garlic have skyrocketed 30 percent as the majority of garlic consumed in the US is produced in China. Meat producer, Tyson Foods, nearly went bankrupt because their processing plants were temporarily shut down due to the pandemic.

Liddie’s Traditional New Mexican Dishes: Chicos With Pork

Española Valley

To me, making a pot of homegrown chicos is the ultimate way to honor the history of our northern New Mexican lives. Growing up in a small house in the Española Valley, we had a nice sized yard that was large enough for a small flower and vegetable garden and a flock of chickens, but no land for major planting. Growing corn was not an option when the family moved to Española from the family farm in El Rito in 1950.

My favorite stories that my grandmother told were of old times on the big ranch in Read More

Home Country: Windy Wilson

Home Country
By Slim Randles

“Well,” Steve said, polishing off the last of his coffee, “what should we discuss this fine morning?”

“I’m awful glad you asked, ol’ pard,” came the cheerful voice of Windy Wilson, emerging through the swinging doors that came from the kitchen of the Mule Barn truck stop.

“Yessir. Awful glad.” Steve and the other members of the world dilemma think tank looked in amazement as this old camp cook and cowboy came over with the coffee pot and topped off their coffee mugs. Windy had found a dish towel and wrapped it around his waist, too.

“Windy?” Doc. said “Mighty fine-looking Read More
