On behalf of Los Alamos Public Schools, I am pleased to announce that Lisa Montoya has been selected as the new Chief Financial Officer of Los Alamos Public Schools. 

Ms. Montoya brings 17 years experience in business and has a Business Administration degree from New Mexico State University.  She comes to Los Alamos Public Schools from Pojoaque Valley Schools where she served as Comptroller and Chief Procurement Officer.

School Grades Show New Mexico on Path to Improvement

There are several take-aways from the latest round of the New Mexico Public Education Department’s school grading.

One is that more schools earned A’s and B’s, and another is that more schools earned D’s and F’s.

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Los Alamos High School student Sidney Ellis with a scholarship Tuesday. Sidney was recognized for his participation since 8th grade in the United Way Youth Group as well as serving as a coach to young basketball players during Toppers Basketball Camp.

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Los Alamos High School student Laura Dison with a scholarship this past Tuesday.

Dison was recognized for her community service to Teen Court the past two years in serving as juror, attorney and judge as well as her participation in NJROTC and assisting with the monthly pancake breakfasts held at the Posse Lodge.

NWS Conducts Weather Spotter Class At PEEC

Kerry Jones of the National Weather Service (NWS) will a conduct SKYWARNTM Weather Spotter class 5:30-7:30 p.m., Aug. 7 at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

Meteorologists from the NWS will teach the basics of severe local storms, to include thunderstorms, flash floods, downburst winds, tornadoes, and more. They also will talk about NWS operations, important safety information, and how to stay prepared.

Los Alamos Schools Earn High Marks From State

Los Alamos Public Schools received high marks from the New Mexico Public Education Department. Three schools were awarded “A” grades and four schools earned “B” grades for 2014. 

Just released report cards by the NMPED reflected the high quality of instruction by Los Alamos schools. Schools receiving “A” grades included Los Alamos High School, Barranca Mesa Elementary and Mountain Elementary. Aspen, Chamisa, Pinon and Los Alamos Middle School received “B” grades.

This year marks the 22nd Annual Butterfly Count in Los Alamos County, but this year the count carries a special meaning.

This is the first count since the passing of Living Treasure Dorothy Hoard, who initiated the Los Alamos County annual butterfly counts more than 20 years ago. As such, the annual butterfly count will from now on be known as the “Dorothy Hoard Memorial Butterfly Count.”
