News Alert: Smoke Likely Above Los Alamos Today
COUNTY News Alert:
Residents may see smoke from the San Juan County fires caused by an oil rig explosion drifting over Los Alamos by late afternoon.
According to weather service modeling of the smoke, local weather conditions and expected wind patterns, the smoke is likely to be observed above Los Alamos by approximately 3 p.m..
Hazmat officials are on scene in San Juan County and monitoring air quality. They reported that there are no toxic chemicals detected in the plumes. Read More

Council Taps Anne Nobile For Probate Judge
Longtime Los Alamos resident Anne Nobile is Los Alamos County’s new probate judge.
She replaces Bill McKerley who resigned when it was determined he could not hold the position while also serving as chair of the Republican Party of Los Alamos. He resigned May 20, 2016 but agreed to serve until replaced.

A new Los Alamos County website, www.losalamosbondprojects2017.com, provides residents with information on pre-conceptual designs for proposed Capital Improvement Projects including road improvements, existing county facility improvements and development of new facilities.
The site includes information on the projects including site selection, schematic designs and cost estimates. Sheriff’s Department Announces New Registered Sex Offender In Los Alamos County

Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero is advising the community of a newly registered sex offender.
Matthew English registered with the local sheriff’s office today. He was convicted in the First District Court of Los Alamos of one count of “Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor in the 3rd Degree, (Child Under 13).”
Matthew English is residing at 650 San Ildefonso Road, Apt. D6, in Los Alamos.

Letter To The Editor: Fiscal Frugality And County Council — Support Your Local Sheriff
I have been mulling over Councilor (Kristin) Henderson’s comments on frugality vs. wasteful duplication in our County government and decided to be very impressed.
I will be even more so when she identifies the five Councilors that she has convinced to join her in resigning from the Council to avoid the wasteful ‘duplication’ of having seven Councilors instead of just one.

If the state law regarding who has the authority to hire and fire deputy sheriffs is as straightforward as stated by Sheriff Lucero in the Los Alamos Daily Post story today (July 2, 2016), then the county administration and Council are grossly out of line.
