PEEC News:

Explore six areas in the Valles Caldera, Saturday Oct. 21, with geologists Fraser and Cathy Goff.

This is an amazing opportunity to learn about the volcanology of the preserve and see little-known geothermal springs with the person who literally wrote the book on the Valle's geology.

Explore in the Valles Caldera. Participants will park at the visitor center and ride vans in a large loop around the Caldera backcountry. The group will start at the Valles Caldera Visitor Center in the Valle Grande, ride through the northeastern valley (Valle San Antonio), cross into the Sulphur Creek drainage, visit part of the geothermal system, and return to the visitor center along N.M. 4.

Fraser Goff is the author of Valles Caldera: A Geologic History. Along with an extensive resume, Goff was Chief Scientist and Principal Investigator on three high-temperature scientific wells in the Valles Caldera, and has worked on about 40 geothermal systems and 15 active volcanoes worldwide during his career. Fraser has spent more than 38 years working in the Jemez Mountains and Valles Caldera. Cathy also is an accomplished geologist and has worked on geothermal and volcanic projects throughout the western USA, and in Alaska, Hawaii, Latin America, Italy and Japan.

This guided van tour costs $60 for non-members and $48 for PEEC members. Space is limited and advance registration is required. This tour is  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  and starts and ends at the Valles Caldera Visitor Center.
