OPERA News:

Live long and prosper! For the 6th year, The Los Alamos Opera Guild of The Guilds of The Santa Fe Opera, Inc. is presenting Opera on the Rocks Saturday, Sept. 30, at Bandelier National Monument, National Public Lands Day.

This year features scenes from Mozart's comic opera The Abduction from the Seraglio with a new adaptation that moves it into the future to a universe that looks a lot like Star Trek. Proving that Mozart's genius is truly timeless, this space opera spoof tells the story of two starship crew women who are captured by Klingons and eventually rescued by brave officers of the star ship. Opera Alta will present this version based on the show developed by the Pacific Opera Project who gladly shared their idea after enjoying several sold-out performances in Los Angeles.

Opera on the Rocks is an informal, family-oriented introduction to the world of opera, set in the beautiful rustic amphitheater at Bandelier’s Juniper Campground. Shuttle buses will bring visitors from Sullivan Field in Los Alamos, or from the White Rock Visitors Center, leaving between 3:30-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30.

At the amphitheater, vendors will include food by Sirphey and drinks offered by Black Mesa and Gruet wineries and Santa Fe Cider Works. Craft activities and snacks will be provided for children. Audience members are encouraged to wear their own Trekkie costumes to join in the fun. The shuttles will return everyone around 7:45 p.m. to their original points.

This annual event is a fundraiser for The Santa Fe Opera Education and Community Programs and for the Friends of Bandelier. Ticket prices are $15 for individuals or $40 for a family of four. Opera Guild members pay $10 for individuals or $25 for a family of four. Overnight campers at Juniper Campground can attend for free.
