Staff Report

The 2017 Los Alamos Relay for Life Saturday at Ashley Pond Park raises money for the American Cancer Society.

The community was invited to participate in a number of ways. In former years, Los Alamos Relay for Life teams have walked throughout the night, however, this year participants began at 10 a.m. and walked for whatever amount of time they wished until the 9 p.m. closing ceremony.

Called the most important event of the day, the Survivors Lap began at 9:30 a.m. and family members, caregivers anf friends joined survivors for a lap around Ashley Pond.

There also was an hour of Zumba organized by Natalie Smith and Party to Go brought in bounce houses and donated 25 percent of the proceeds to Relay for Life.

The Los Alamos Hill Stompers performed as did the band Trouble Cliff, which plays funk, traditional jazz, folk, hip hop and New Orleans grooves. DJ Art Martinez also was there until the closing ceremony.

There was a mass release of balloons with messages or personal notes to people who have passed away as a result of cancer. There also was the traditional Luminaria Ceremony.

Sponsors for the event include, Los Alamos Medical Center, KRSN AM 1490, Los Alamos Daily Post, Time Out Pizza, Party to Go, KZRR 94 Rock, Metzgers Do It Best, Allan Wadlinger and Smith’s Marketplace.
