LANL FOUNDATION News:

Española — Nominations are now accepted for the Rio Arriba County Excellence in Teaching Award. An engraved plaque and $1,000 prize will be given to seven teachers in Rio Arriba County in honor of their dedication and to bring encouragement and support to the education profession.

The program is offered by the nonprofit Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation and Centerra-Los Alamos (CLA), the Laboratory’s protective force contractor.

“Centerra–Los Alamos is proud to again partner with the LANL Foundation on the Excellence in Teaching Award. Outside of the family, teachers have the greatest impact on our next generation of citizens, who will lead this great nation through its future challenges,” CLA General Manager Ted Spain said. “Teachers do not receive enough recognition for their contributions. It is our honor to highlight just a few of the many outstanding teachers in our local communities.”

Qualified nominees must have taught at their current kindergarten through 12th public, Tribal, or charter school in Rio Arriba County for at least three years. Current and former students, teachers, administrators and other colleagues may submit nominations through the online form at www.lanlfoundation.org/teacheraward by the Oct. 31 deadline.

“There are so many fantastic teachers in Rio Arriba County, and they rarely get acknowledged,” Jenny Parks, LANL Foundation CEO, said. “We hope this award will give recognition to some of them who go the extra mile for their students. It is clear that the teacher/student relationship plays the biggest role in education. LANL Foundation is committed to supporting educators and valuing them for the important work they do.”

Each teacher’s impact on his or her school, students and community; leadership qualities; cultivation of positive culture; and inspiration of lifelong learning in others will be considered by the selection committee, made up of invited community members and staff from sponsoring organizations. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded before the end-of-year break.
