LWVLA And AAUW Host 2018 Legislative Preview

The League of Women Voters of Los Alamos and the American Association of University Women invite the community to the 2018 Legislative Preview 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 in Fuller Lodge. Refreshments and conversation begin at 6:30 p.m. for this event.

Los Alamos egislators—Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard and Senators Carlos Cisneros and Richard Martinez—will share their views on the upcoming session. Also, Artie Pepin, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, will discuss the new (2017) pretrial release and detention rules issued by the New Mexico Supreme Court, as well as the need for increased funding for the judiciary.

The 2018 New Mexico Legislative Session begins Jan. 16 in Santa Fe and continues for 30 days. By law, the New Mexico Legislature convenes in regular sessions in Santa Fe at noon on the third Tuesday in January. The legislature  meets for 60 days In odd-numbered years, and for 30 days in even-numbered years. The Governor may call the legislature into a special session by proclamation.

Lasting only 30 days, the short session is limited to primarily budget items, as well as vetoed legislation from 2017 constitutional amendments, and legislation that the Governor puts on her call.
