BUSINESS News:

There is a place in Los Alamos where participants can do anything from 3D printing to basic genetic testing.

This place is made available by Los Alamos Makers. Prisca Tiasse, a member of Los Alamos Makers, said the organization operated Makerspace for almost a year and a half.

She explained, “We brought a group of people together to share skills and space for particular projects and made it open to the community.”

Tiasse added, “We serve a variety of people of all ages. We provide customized services and classes including 3D printing, woodworking, sewing, jewelry making, computer programming, electronics, computer design and basic genetic testing.”

“We offer space for classes, individual benches and storage, mentorship opportunities, free special interest meet ups for people to connect, share skills and tips for particular projects and free programming clubs,” she said.

Tiasse said the organization enjoys seeing people take their interests and run with them. “Some of our biggest accomplishments are when people explore a new trade or skill and get hooked, or just start a new business based on their newly acquired skills. We also love it when parents of students thank us for ‘opening [their] eyes to a whole new world’.”

For Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25, Tiasse said  there will be an open house 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with activities, demos, giveaways, and bake sale.

She added, “If you need holiday gift ideas and would you like to support local and small businesses, come support our local maker community.  We will be featuring local makers and artists with their handcrafted items along with several demonstrations such as live oil painting and 3D printing.

Discover what your local community makerspace is all about and how to get involved while enjoying refreshments and fun giveaways.”
