LA Co+op Celebrates 3rd Birthday Saturday

on February 26, 2014 - 12:06pm

Co+op News:

The Los Alamos Co+op Market will celebrate its three-year anniversary Saturday. Coined its “Tree Year” Anniversary, the Co+op is donating trees to help off-set carbon created by co-op operations.

The Co+op also will support the local environment by sponsoring a seed ball making activity led by the Family YMCA. The wildflower seed balls will later be dispersed on open space land by Family YMCA youth to help beautify community open spaces, especially in areas needing restoration.

Saturday's birthday celebration also includes food samples, activities for all ages, live music and a 10 percent discount day to members.

Activities include:

  • Chair massages by Greg Barthell starting at 9:30 a.m.;
  • A live performance by the String Theory String Quartet 10 a.m. to noon;
  • Pet dairy goats and taste dairy products from Camino de Paz school and farm 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.;
  • Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center teaching wool spinning 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.;
  • Family YMCA's seed ball making activity;
  • Face painting by Son-shine Art noon to 2 p.m.; and
  • Birthday cake (a gluten-free cake, too) noon to 1 p.m.

To offset the Co+op’s carbon use during Saturday's event, the Co+op will donate $1 for each member transaction to purchase trees in the Co+op Forest, run by Pur Project and members will have the option to match the $1 donation. The Co+op Forest is a Carbon Offset Program established by the National Cooperative Grocer’s Association (NCGA) to offset carbon generated by retail co-op business travel. NCGA is a business services cooperative made up of grocery co-ops who bring co-ops programs including Co+op Deals. LACM is one of 136 co-ops that belong to NCGA.

The Los Alamos Co+op Market is at 95 Entrada Dr. and inside Fusion Multisport on Central Avenue across from CB FOX. Visit www.losalamos.coop or call 505.695.1579 for information.
